hi all am after some advice i own a td5 discovery 2001 but i used to own a defender 90 which was just used to off road now i aint been off roading for a while and i have the bug again. what am wondering is do i sell the disco and get a 90 or keep and modify the disco it wont b just for off road i really want to go on a expedition to a few countrys but am thinking of the cost if i sell my disco would only get £3000 and a nice 90 what i would want is going to cost 6k to 8k. then to start modifying it for expeditions is going to push it up again so am thinking spend 2k on the disco i hav now. i do love defenders but i do like not having to worry every nite about it gettin stolen. i do like the extra bit of speed that you get on road for gettin home in disco but parts ar dear for disco compared to 90 when they break. plus if i get a lift will it cause alot of problem like when i lifted my old 90 had to get new arms front and back as i would like to fit bigger tyres if i keep disco i really like the disco on the discovery 2 site that he has built but i love most 90s that people hav build or if am thinking of expedtions should i just look for a 110. oooooooo i need help wot would b worth doing in the long run thanks

Get a 90..

As you say, parts are cheaper, easier to work on, can fit bigger tyres than on the disco without having to modify bodywork...

and above all, its a 90 :D

i no i no hav been looking at some 90s but the prices make me  even on old rust buckets they want crazy prices but was thinking same think at back of me mind you hav just pushed it more forward ha ha

If you have the money to buy a 90 then go for it!!

Do up your disco and it's worth less!!
Do up a 90 and it's worth MORE ££££

if you are thinking expeditions , then either get a 110 or mod your disco , a110 will be a bit cheaper than a ninety , which are overpriced generally due demand , but you need to have a very good look at your disco re corrossion !!!

Modded 'fenders go for a lot less than the cost to mod them on fleebay. I know there is the top end market for modded defenders (e.g. the Nene ones) but, your every day modded off-roader defenders aren't proffitable.

:5biagree:

watched a tdi trialer go unsold at £2500 recently on ebay with full mot & tax. Had everything a modder could want (extreme wings, lift, tyres, winches etc.) but modded defenders sometimes will be worth less than a good clean standard example.

might have been a 1 off but the defender market seems strange at the mo.

I AGREE but by putting on extreme wing an stuff like that it becomes just purely an off roader an people don't want to spend a lot for just an off roader most people wont a off roader/every day driver there's a fine line between tastefully modifying an bolting on ****e

Could not agree more!!!
If you put something on that the YOU like make sure you can take it off if need be.

Or just buy something which is so old and cheap and already hacked that you don't give a s**t if it sells for nothing if you ever sell it and do what you like to it :) (that's my moto)

:confused::confused::confused: confused now

how can it be worth more if your just gonna take it off again

Things like stearing guard, snorkel, diff guards chequer plate, rock sliders are what most people want on a 90 and leave not change to vehicle when taken off!!

But things like full roll cage front end been hacked away because they had a winch but taken off before sale!! And different wings these things are not to everyones taste and not easily or cheaply irreversible!!

thanks for the replys. dont really want a modded defender as i had a lot of mods on mine and i abused it off roading at 4x4 centres so would rather stay away from modded ones. it would still b used day to day sometimes aswell. think i am looking for a 110 for the extra load space would a 300tdi b best to look for expedition drives. as i wont b going to offroad play days just green laning it is still in my mind to just modd the disco. as i hav had the clutch and flywheel replaced plus it still not got a lot on the clock. i would need to lift it for bigger tyres but wouldnt want to take jigsaws to the body of throw angles out and cause vibrations.do any of the expedition vechiles get different seats put in aswell. as defender seat aint as comfy as disco one even more so wen u could be sat in them for a long time.one last thing if i did the gearbox mod on the disco to give difflock can they b better off road than a 300tdi def cos they hav tc on the discos aswell as i havent off roaded the disco so i aint found out

Depends entirely on what circumstances.

Going over a steep breakover on a hill a 90 will easily outdo the disco as the disco will ground out.
But then going up a steep wet grassy hill (on the same tyres) the disco will get further due to having TC.. Of course comes down to the driver, how well they know their vehicle and their ground reading ability.
When green laning there is few places where a defender would be better than a disco, afterall they are technically roads and therfore if they aren't passable in a standard 4x4 then really you shouldn't be driving them - overlanding however a defender would be much better as they have much less to go wrong - No SLS, ABS, TC, HDC, oil getting into ECUs etc etc...
