Sorry - should have asked in previous post. My 1985 CSW 90 had a 200 TDI conversion back in 1997. The serial number of the replacement engine is 11L07516A how can I tell if it was originally from a discovery or from a defender?

The reason I am asking is because I want to service it and there seem to be some differences and I want to make sure I get the right parts!

Thanks & sorry for being a newbie

Dont know about numbers, but if from defender turbo high up,if from discovery turbo low down, but some chance manifold may have been changed.

The turbo is above the manifold and looks like one of those older garrett style turbos (its round like a donut). All the pictures of 200 TDIs I can find on the web have a long cylindrical turbo unit to the right of the cylinder head but my turbo is quite small and sits at the same height as the cylinder head just over half way back.

Does that sound like a Defender engine? Thanks

if the alternator belt is driven off the power steering pump it's a disco engine.

the only real difference between the 2 is the location of the water pump in the front casting.

Without a picture it's difficult to tell. Just to add to the confusion, the turbo may not be from the original engine (2.5TD turbos can be made to fit).
