Hallo everyone,
I am going overland soon to Marocco for a couple of weeks but later to Asia and South America (2014 and 2016).
I have decided on a Disco TDI late model (could still be pursuaded for a TD5 but want it as uncomplicated as possible - i am not an experienced mechanic myself) but undecided about to get a manual gearbox or automatic gearbox for overland expedition.
I will not do "hard core" offroad with 30 degrees inclines etc (unless I absolutely have to do it to get from A to B). I am more taking it easy expedition looking at the sights etc.
But in case it breaks down assume manual is easier to fix?

Any ideas and thoughts most welcome. Thank you in advance :)

Had in mind to get a late Disco TDI with Low mileage, new Cambelt and perhaps even an ES version - about GBP 3k - why not go in style?
We will just be two in car, sleep in tent on ground, may not even bother with roof rack as could upset stability, other wise will use as daily vehicle and need car that can do decent speed (hence not going for Defender TDi).
:)

A number of years ago I took a Toyota Surf/4 Runner manual to Egypt, similar to you I wanted a wee bit off adventure but did not set out to drive up 45 degree slopes on purpose. I hated being on twisty narrow roads and having to worry about dropping a gear when going around a corner.
A few years later I took a Ford Explorer on the same trip and loved the auto box and aircon but (hated the ground clearance).

My choice is an auto box, sadly my disco does not have A/C and if I were to go again I would have a 300tdi ES with A/C making sure that I had the as I do on my current disco Alisport large size intercooler (which is a custom fit if you have A/C) and the Alisport Radiator (works sooper efficient). Oh and cruise control that works. It will be a long way with motor way before you get to good stuff.
I used a safari style roof rack on both my previous trips and found it useful enough for the light and waterproof stuff.

In the words of Dave Lambeth:
If you go by truck, pack as if you are in a car/4x4
If you go by car/4x4, pack as if you are on a motorcycle
If you go by motorcycle, pack as if you are on bicycle
If you go by bicycle, pack like you're walking.

You always take too much stuff. Good luck and have fun!

Automatic gearbox sounds the way to go. Thank you very much for your input. Now just going to find a nice 300 TDI ES with lowish mileage :)
