Saw what I thought was a tidy 1999 V8 Disco on ebay (X91 MGH), seller assured me that there were absolutly no coolant loss, cracked block/head gasket problems etc etc, seemed very genuine. Price was right with a respectable LPG conversion. Anyway, finally scraped the £4K cash together and went to view it. Slight leak and hissing noise from the water pump area... ok, not the end of the world, an easy fix. Then I noticed that there seemed to be lots of dried up coolant around the expansion tank breather and sprayed over the bulkhead (been blown back by the engine fan?). Oil appeared clean enough with no obvious water in it, however oil filler cap had been roughly and recently cleaned out - probably to remove a deposit of mayo, some heavy condensation will evident in the cap.

No steam from exhaust that I could see.

On attempted removal of the expansion tank cap the coolant gushed out and after what felt like an age was still gushing so I gave up waiting and abandoned the purchase.

Was I right in thinking that this was an almost definate headgasket problem?

Cheers!

Possibly but when that happened to my range rover number 3 cylinder liner had slipped. Cost me £3500 for an engine rebuild.

Yep sounds almost the same as mine, same bill too although I did upgrade from 4.0 to 4.6.

To be honest though 4 grand for an X seems a bit steep, only paid that for my 02 16 months ago.
