hi all

recently was looking for advice re my 1996 disc which belched out black smoke from time to time and promised an update
took advice and changed all filters and oil which did help smoking was certainly less but still having a fly puff now and then plus still felt there was more in the engine power wise so took too a very tame mechanic who loves to work on anything land rover and very reasonable who blanked off egr valve had a look at exhaust manifold gasket which was split so replaced it checked valves which needed slight attention and tweeked injection pump

and is now a completly different vehicle pulling well and best of all no more smoking I think the split gasket and egr valve were main culprits

so thankyou to all who added advice and input:)

yeah removing the EGR made a massive difference on my 300tdi mate, like it could breathe again :)

think i might have cracked the exhaust manifold gasket joint when i was trying to take the EGR off, slipped and gave the manifold a whollop by accident :( ah well, need to take the inlet manifold off for a clean anyway so gonna need to fit a new gasket.

My EGR plate arrived yeaterday, so hoping to get that fitted in a week or so (need an intercooler hose too though). I hoping just to get a little improvement as a part from leaking my 300tdi dosen't feel too bad to drive.

I still think it's just wierd that EGR's arwe fitted at all when it's one of the main suggestions for improving you landy .

Glad to hear that people do see real diffrence with it done though.
