Gents,

This site is a great resource. Got my dad's freelander sorted and now am on to my wifes 2001 TD5 disco auto.

Had very sluggish performance before xmas and got a local mechanic to check any obvious faults (fuel filter etc.) found nothing but put it on a diagnostic machine and get the following fault - Code001: air flow circuit fault, Logged low. Code002 Airflow circuit fault. currently active.

Notice now that there is lots of black smoke when it starts and it you give it a bit of rev it will clear and eventually take off (with much less power)

Mechanic says I need a new air flow meter/sensor. In ireland from a main dealer these are approx 300euro. Mechanic suggested I get on web and he will fit. Can anyone confirm the actual part. Had a look on web and there are lots of variations.

any advice or help greatly appreciated.

thanks and regards

John

To be sure if it is the air flow meter, simlpy unplug it, this will cause the ecu to use " general " air flow values when fuelling.

Check for a blocked or broken air filter, and feel your turbo pipes. If they are really soft, then they may have delaminated causing a restricktion in air flow.

go with what 50 pence has said as it is easy to prove the MAF and check the hoses.I have replaced my MAF with one off EBAY. Only about £40 but if you buys cheap you takes the risk. So far 2 yrs later still ok. If that aint the kiss of death then i dont know what is.

I know it sounds simple (and maybe a bit stupid) but where do I find it to unplug it and will the car run with it unplugged?

Also, is the MAF the same as the air flow meter? do you know what the formal part is called (saw lots of different ones on web).

Apologies but have not had to touch the engine since I bought it 4 years ago.

thanks

John

Just unplug and go for a drive.

50 Pence,

Did as you suggested and disconnected the sensor. Started with the same smokey put put from the exhaust and when I drove it has the same lack of power. Does this confirm it is the air flow meter (is it call an MAF also?)? thanks, John

YES, Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor ... but if no change with it unplugged there's something else ...first of all put a new air filter

by the way do you still have EGR fitted? ...if yes check this too

I know this may sound stupid but where is the ERG and can I just remove it (or get a mechanic to do it) will it affect emissions for MOT etc.? thanks

It will not affect MOT for the time being(only if they'll change the regulations)...clean and keep the valve cos as u will see it's quite easy to remove/refit. Here u go www.discovery2.co.uk /workshop - EGR removal ... u will figure it out if it's de-EGR'd or not.

I'm happy to help u but try to use the search facility of this forum sometimes cos there are many very common, overcovered issues (like this for example) and u'll end up without answers if u dont search before u ask;)

Gents, may sound silly but after some advice from 50 pence, I checked the air filter and it was pretty clogged up. After a clean out put it back and engine ran much smoother. Seems this was the major problem. will replace next week for a new one and hopefully that will be a full fix. rgds John

my heart is bleeding :(

Might have spoken too soon (these bloody LR's are a life's work!!). Took out the air filter and let it run but noticed it is still running pretty rough from cold. Also noticed that when I gave it a good rev in front of garage door lots of nice black oily gunk was pasted to the door. is this pretty common or does it suggest a specific problem?
