thermostat, water pump and half a timing belt done today, would have been all done had my crank pulley decided to come off quickly!

3 hours later and a whole tin of penetrating oil off she popped. up early doors tomorrow to get the belt off and all rebuilt to go to redcar for 6pm.

Got spring spacers to fit, thinking it may be a weekend job?? anyone fitted these? if you have how long did it take start to finnish?

Clutch next week ( joy oh joy )

In your opinion Is the timing belt an easy enough job to do for a slightly experienced beginner? I'm good with the spanners and have changed the stat and a few other bits like suspension, brake pipes, calipers, exhaust etc and would like to have a go if I can, but don't wanna get halfway through and come stuck.what do you think?

I did mine for the first time couple of weeks ago and it was quite easy but there are a couple of "tricks" to learn
first buy a oem kit, there is some crap about

second make sure you have the correct timing locking tools, they are about £15 off ebay, I tried first with drill bits and for inexperienced me it was a disaster, the right pins made the job easy also you will almost certinally need a puller for the crankshaft pully but one is easy to make. And where I came unstuck was with torquing the pully bolt back up, you really need a locking tool to hold the pully while you torque the bolt I tried all the tricks of putting the car in low range and stuff, all that happened for me was the clutch slipped!!

third make sure you know what kit to fit, landrover did an update to some 300 tdi engines

four read as much as you can , there are some very good "how to" on the net

Now I have done it once, the next time will be easy!!

i am not a mechanic nor claim to be but i managed to change belt fine, shes running like a dream now. do the timing belt, water pump and thermostat all at the same time. buy a 32mm viscous fan spanner, i managed with a 12mm masonry bit in the fuel pump. definatly make a crank puller as it took me ages to get mine off. also check the idler pulley is located in its recess if in doubt look down from the top of the engine, the idler should be slightly closer to the block than the tensioner. if you get stuck give me a call and ill do my best to talk you through it. 07773 4216(nine)8
