Hi everyone, I have a 96 300tdi disco that has developed an intermitent problem with the brakes that I can't figure, any advice greatly recieved. The brake pedal started to lock up when on full lock but was normal when applied on a straight road until yesterday when I could feel a vibration through the pedal accompanied by a metalic clank much like a spring being twanged, (same symptoms as on full lock). I have had the front wheels off and everything appears normal. Too add to my woes the abs light is now a permanent fixture!

Have you come up with the answer? My '97R 300Tdi did this when I had to brake sharply today. Straight lane, at about 20mph slowing to approach a narrow bridge, road is always slightly muddy at this point as it's by a field gate, woman in car parked in the gateway let her labrador out of the car and I hit my brakes sharper than I've ever needed to. Rear wheels slid - the rear tyres are near the legal limit, wish I'd had some for Christmas - but it pulled hard right with exactly the feel and noise you describe.

i has simalar probs on mine but i didnt get any metalic noise just the abs cutting in on the peddle, even slowing towards a junction or over a drain cover etc, it has now gone and never done it since having new swivels etc as they were shagged.i also had a new cv as that was worn and had explained to the mechanic the abs issue, he replaced the abs bushes etc and also showed me that the cv was covered in muck on the grooves where the sensor picks up its info all of this could of played a part or just 1? i would check all the above for cleaness/wear as mine is tip top now and no sensors replaced..
if your light is on i think the ecu will need resetting?

Hi guys!
Problem could be in the gap between sensor and CV joint's grooved collar .
When no warning light just a gap on one wheel ,light on permanently - to big gap, broken sensor ,wire or hydraulic unit.

This is your abs - the vibration is the abs rapidly turning on and off your brakes and the twanging is the hydraulic motor trying to back off your brakes.
At a guess I'd say one of your sensors needs banging down.
Use this http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f8/300-abs-light-27043-4.html to find the fautl in your abs.
