WHY do we modify (or adapt, re-engineer, customise, whatever your turn of phrase is) our vehicles??

fitting a de-cat to the disco today - its half way done :doh: Haynes says 5 bolts, slide old piece out, refit is reversal of removal. NOWHERE does it mention anti roll bar dropped down, or oil cooler pipes moved out the way, or airbox removal, or intercooler pipe removal!! probably my own fault tho - lack of flexi pipe was always gonna make it hard.

back to my question tho - LR (like all car companies) spend millions each year to develop cars, and we come along with our sheds and our 'strengthened improved' parts and our halfords tool kits and 'make them better'. what was so bad about the origional??

ive spent the last 10 years 'modifying' cars, either my own cars or custom work for other people, mostly working with vauxhalls and usually making them (in the customers opinion) alot better looking, or faster, or better round corners. finished my last car 2 years ago and swore blind i would NEVER modify my own car again - ive owned the disco 2 days and half the engine is in the boot, the other half in my bathtub havin just been washed out of my hair!!

skinned knuckles, black fingers, and a sore head is NOT big and its NOT clever!!

Jack up the chassis till the wheel is about to leave the deck, then try again...

Fitted mine (without flexi) in about half an hour!

Assuming yours is a defender pipe, also look at fitting another support point as found on the disco one, before the joint to the second section.
 
Well, you asked the question - why do we spend all that time modifying our Landies when LR spent millions developing them?

Here is a classic example of why we do it, in my case, this very day. It took about an hour, and NO BLOOD was spilled, so the job may not be a good 'un!

I have removed the whole Goddam thing from the engine, and the effect WILL be as follows:

More power, especially pulling trailers at low-ish revs.

Much better fuel consumption, perhaps as much as 15% better (like 27 mpg becomes 31 mpg)

LESS POLLUTION because we are using less fuel.

Less to go wrong.

And the total cost was under £30.00 the lot for the INERT bits that replace that lot and let only clean fresh air into the engine, and not some filthy mix of exhaust gas.

fook me you think thats hard you should try working on jcb 1.5 ton diggers when you have arms and hands the size of shovels!!!!

If you have hands the size of shovels why bother about wasting diesel in a JCB 1½ ton digger?
