I'm looking for a winter toy now that my race season is coming to an end, I want something that I can use for green laning and pay&play days, I was looking at either a disco 300tdi or defender 90 300tdi, I'm looking at about £2500-ish. What do you reckon????

if you can afford a defender get one of them, i would argue they are marginally more capable than a disco, and more importantly a defenders value wont fall through the floor like a discos

Yep.. same as above.

Judging by your name I assume you have a zx10r.... in Feb I was in the same position as you... I ride a blade and got to winder and lost count of the boring weekends sat at home doing nothing cause of raining outside.... so decided to get a winter toy.

Started to look for defenders, but the price was just ridiculous for age and condition... to get something decent is a lot of money to end up rolling, banging on trees, etc...
So in the end I got a disco 200 :)

Still love the defenders, just cant justify the cost of one to end up all smashed up.

If it's comfort yer wanting, get a disco. If yer happy to rough it and don't need to carry many people get a 90. I'd have a disco over a 90 due to lack of space for me lunch box, but I favour 110's over disco's.

If it is just laning and play days then you will find the Disco more practical and more comfortable.

Yea if you find getting stuck more pratical :p

It's like Ratty said, if you want comfort, or to carry more than one passenger get a Disco, or a one ten. If you want maximum performance get a 90.

If you are only using it for laning and playing (and with no more than one passenger) you may as well get a truck cab, lighter and cheaper, also look at 200tdi, just as good as 300tdi, but cheaper....

I'm not too fussed about comfort, I spend most weekend's sat on top of a single seat 178bhp missile with rock hard race suspension:D, so a truck cab 90? what's the difference between 200tdi and 300 tdi?, would a td5 be worth looking at (if I could afford one) what about td5 disco?
cheers for the pointers!

200tdi and 300tdi basically the same engine, but the 300tdi

"had over 200 changes to improve the refinement and on-road performance of the engine. However, in the process the economy of the engine was reduced slightly, as was the ability for it to be serviced by the owner."

TD5 has 11 more HP, but more electronics to go wrong, though to be fair the people I know who have TD5's haven't had any probs. I think you pay a fair bit more though, and unless you look after your toys better than me it wouldn't be worth it :D
(avtar shows my toy on it's first weekend out)

If you want to treat it fairly harshly offroad a defender would be a better choice than a disco 2 (td5). If reliabilityy and home maintenance are your thing then go for a 200 or 300 tdi. If you want a bit more power and have access to a diagnostic then go for a td5. I would say that your best bet would be to look around with an open mind and see what comes up. If you are looking for a specific vehicle with a specific engine it never comes up when you want it to.
