Hi, can anybody clear up an annoying issue I have with my old Discovery?

I have a '96 5 door with 157000 miles on the clock. I've had her about 8 months and she has been great, especially during the snowy times.

Recently, just prior to its mot, I noticed a bit of vibration and low srtobing noise in the cab. This has now been joined by a rather severe clunking sound when changing down and when in over-run. Occasionaly also combined with a jerking of the vehicle - remeniscent of 'hunting'.:(

The clunking sounds very metallic and I suspect some part of the drive train or gears.

I have looked at my drive shafts, wiggled them (there appears to be alot of slack) and I've even kicked the tyres.
Now I am at a loss as to what to do. Mechanics are not my thing really. Trees, well that's fine but all the metally, oily bits under the car are not my area.

Two mechanical soothsayer friends of mine have suggested uj's and/or gearbox.

Any other suggestions greatly appreciated.:)

''srtobing''

What is this new word?

Lol....:) What? have you never heard of srtobing? it's all the rage down our way..... Prolem is I have chipolata's for fingers and crossed eyes..
There I go again, what's a prolem?

Thanks for getting back so fast. An a frame ball joint? is that a problem in my shoulder?

;)

No, its a pain in the arse. Not really...do a search..

Storm, you're a star. Loads cheeper than I thought and reading the previous posts, shouldn't cost much to get it split either. Loads better than gear boxes and other frightening things I was told. I will certainly give it a go.
Right then, think I'll get on with some srtobing!! ;)

Thanks again

Get them to check the UJ's too, and the rear donut ... ;)

A disco with a clunk.. that sounds familiar! :)

I'm currently chasing down a similiar metalic clunk on changing up/down.. having already replaced the both front prop UJ's, the rear prop donut and UJ (as they all seemed a bit past it and they are easy to do (and cheap - 15 quid a UJ and 30 for the donut) I'm now also looking at the very slight play I have in the A frame joint.. And I'm going to change the diff/gearbox and transfer box oils.. just in case.. Hopefully that will cure it... As otherwise it might be the dreaded "main shaft spline wear" which my local "mechanic" seemed to jump on as "ooo er mate.. these landies are prone to it.. and it ain't cheap to fix"... (see grubby bloke, rubbing hands together smiling).. So I decided to have a go myself on the easier things and eliminate those before thinking about new gearboxes/transfer boxes.

Anyway.. good luck :)

Might also be worth checking the engine and gearbox mounts too ...

Thanks Paul, I have checked engine/gearbox mounts and they seem ok (what do I know?) well, nothing moves when I tried to give 'em a good hard wobble.

I will get the u/j's done as a matter of course. In fact, I will do the ball joint and anything else to avoid tinkering with the gearbox as that is both out of my comfort and financial zone.

If I can't cure the clunking and srtobing;) by doing the obvious then look out for it on ebay.

The mot is due soon and I suppose there is no point in putting the poor old girl through that without sorting out the clunking?

Elefantman, thanks for your info, that helps. I will do what you have done then tackle the a-frame whatsit.

If the mahogony laughing shaft is gone then so be it. Like you, I can see the wringing hands of glee.

Cheers
