Hi guys

Was wondering whilst i was replacing the power steer pump on my 1988 90 ( defender 200tdi ) engine i have just recently noticed that my intercooler pipes are starting to lightly leak oil from all the joints ( damp ) but not running out if you know what i mean, does this mean my engine is on its way out or is it a breather problem.

it is due a service next month so whilst i will be doing it i though i would replace the cyclone breather unit for a new bearmach one at the same time, will this sort it and if the engine is on its way out whats the difference between a disco engine and a defender engine in both power and maintenance.

i am partially under the impression the disco engine is better, what do you think :)

quire normal, disco is sightly more powerful a few hp,but basically the same unit

Check where the breather pipe goes into the air filter housing for oil staining, if theres some just route the pipe to atmosphere and clean all the intercooler pipes and it will stay clean, obviously if you do serious off road **** this is a bad idea!

Cheers lynall, yeah we will be doing some off roading every now and then and the breather pipe going into the air filter is oil staining, but only just started doing it over the past couple of months and is gradgely getting worse :(

I had the same staining and tried the oil catcher route, the thing is it needed emptying almost weekly, so gave up and routed the breather pipe to the drivers side inner wing and since then theres been no oil dribbles/staining at all!
Probably the way to go and when off roading just refit it to the filter stub.
I got a stub blank of ebay for a couple of quid
This was approx 3 years ago ish and 20 maybe 30k miles ago so no need to panic yet!
