Disco 2 with body shudder at 60 - 70 mph

Or dont drive it over 60!

Ours starts to vibrate at that speed and since we only use it for towing or in bad weather I have left it, think ours maybe the front prop, as the vibration seems to eminate from that area.....

Hi folks, mounts etc were looked at, garage (independent specialist) said those and the gbox mounts were ok. Props were checked. All passed muster. New wheel bearings front and new brakes all round. Rear bearings to be done this weekend but the old ones run nice and smooth with no rumbling or flat spots. Rear discs are like new. Vibration is starting to drive me nuts, have bought a 60k mile transfer box with difflock as this was part of my upgrade plans to give back the difflock function that LR removed. Then I can do the whole prop removal and diff lock to see if I can narrow it down. Blooming expensive way to do it though. Already £600 in the whole for bearings and discs and pads.

I don't honestly know? Prop just bolts to the hand brake drum. Don't suppose you have a picture or a microcat picture of what I should be looking at

I shall take a look, the casing is relatively new, done by the previous owner, shall check and revert, thanks

Newbie here, any news on this? cured? I have the same / similar problem between 65 and 75mph. Drives me crazy when on dual carriageways.

Any help would be appreciated, although my donut is starting to perish slightly the noise seems to manifest more in the front, than the rear.

Is the affected driveshaft drivers side by any chance? Mine is a 1998 td5. I saw a while back a link to an Australian forum with reference to greasing of the joints...... but I am no mechanic anymore.

Still ongoing at the moment I'm afraid. Fitting a transfer box with difflock so I can lock out the drive and try whittle it down. Shall revert :)

I await a solution with interest as mine is the same. just between 60 and 70, fine from 70
upwards. Only when being driven, not free wheeling in gear. All bearings, joints etc checked,
new tyres. I think it has been there for a while its just got worse over the last year/20k miles

cheers steve

Hi bud, mine is slightly different, it's there both when driven and freewheeling, I get her back the weekend from having a transfer box with cdl fitted so I can can her properly, the hand brake idea scared the shutout of me and had visions of all sorts. I'm leaning toward a diff or prop, have a spare auto box front prop now, that I know is good and access to a diff if needed. Shall keep you posted

Hi
I am pleased to say that changing the prop doughnut on my disco has completely sorted
the vibration. As well as the very noticeable vibration at 60-70 it was obviously vibrating
at other speed cos it is altogether quieter. Thanks for the excellent advice on here!

Hi all, it's finally done, it was a combination of output bearing on the transfer box and front propshaft. All back to normal. Thanks to all

Well I'm sorry to report, it's back. I have done the following:

New transfer box
Donut
Front prop
Front hubs
Front discs

Borrowed another set of wheels.
