Hi Guys,

Got a 'V' plate Disco 2 TD5 (had it for a few years)
The steering has always been a bit odd, Full lock left is good and easy, full lock right has a weak spot that needs a bit of extra force to get to full lock)

other than that it's been fine, leaks no fluid, no noises, no judder.

In the last couple of days it's got a bit strange, from a straight line there is a far bit of resistance to turning the wheel which goes away the more the wheel is turned (both directions)

Still no noise, judder, fluid leaks.

I've had the belt off and everything seems ok, (but the pump isn't free spinning, it needs a grip on the pulley to turn it, I don't know if this is normal as I never took the belt off before)

Any suggestions?

Should I start by replacing the pump, or try the (cheaper) steering box first? or is there a standard fix which is cheaper, quicker?

Or is there something I can try which will prove whats at fault once and for all?

Cheers in advance guys.

IMO if it is the pump at fault u should have a hard steering all the way. There is a power steering pressure check procedure but u need special equipment so u must go to a garage for that. What u can do is raise the front on axle stands, disconnect the drag link and try the steering from lock to lock....it will move easyer but if the box is faulty u will feel the hard spots. Grab one wheel and move it by hand left / right to make sure is not something mechanical(a CV joint or something) . I suspect the box though but i'm not the best when it comes about mechanics:eek:

it could be the u joint (the one near the box) on the steering shaft has seized up .easy to check .
