Hi,

My Disco 2 TD5 ir pumping fuel out from over the top of the tank. It starts dripping as soon as the pump is running.

The filter head and pipes are dry.

I lifted the boot floor and the pump access cover and the four pipes at the pump are clean and dry so the leak must be from in front of them.

All suggestions welcome, but it looks like the tank is coming out tomorrow. Does anyone know if there is a problem with these thing starting leaking?

DAMN!

Took the tank out.
Took 90+ litres diesel out of it first.
Pumped it out through the fuel pump hole - good access.

The leak was found.
The return pipe to the tank (black connecter) had a hole in it where the sleeve of the cables was rubbing on it. Will try a pic later.

Cut out half an inch of pipe including the hole and fitted an 8mm push-fit connector. Job done no more leak.

Ridiculous fault.

What does a main stealer charge to drop a Disco 2 tank?
Tow-bar arms had to come off first.
Then take out the tank.
Then find the fault and fix it.
Make me happy - tell me what I didn't have to pay a main stealer.

had this problem a while ago on a customers car.one of the plastic pipes had rubbed through on a clip.check with your dealer,i think there was a recall for this fault.

£hundreds almost certainly.

For a start off, they would have taken the engine out to check that, then a couples doors off, then the rear axle, boot floor and cross members out to find the problem. Change all the pipes to and from the front of the vehicle (just in case).

Yes, I'm sure it would be several £hundreds! :D :D :D

You have made me very happy.
I can see why they might take the engine out, but why take off the doors?

Because the quality of most LR dealers mechanics is sooooh poor they couldn't find their way out of a paper bag, so, if in doubt take something out !!

Ah yes, I can see why they would do that for a fuel leak problem under the car. It's obvious now you point it out.

Thanks.

Sooo true. A few years ago I bought a knackered 200TDi and took it to a certain stealer at the London end of Kent for a check over - tell me what needs doing & give me a quote. Not only was the quote twice the value of the vehicle, but every single thing they said needed fixing (eg "ladder frame leaking: ooh - that's expensive") was actually OK while they missed a couple of serious faults. Indie chap in kent not only diagnosed correctly (and showed me the evidence) but also charged sensibly. Used him ever since!

i have had 2 TD5 disco's and the same pipe went on both one was a 52 plate commercial and the current one is a 04 plate commercial. They both just happened to fail when i got to the end of a long run to north wales after brimming the tank.

The newer disco had already had the Recall done (so the dealer said) but on both occasions the parts were covered under warranty.

Landrover assistance had to recover me from Bala North wales back to williams LR manchester, my car was of the road for nearly a week while they decided what to do but the up side was that i had a disco 3 to run around in for a week.

when you look at the pipe it is a very poor design on the route of the pipe over the cross member and along the chasis rail.

I couldnt fault the service from William's Land Rover though, they were very helpfull on both occasions.
