Hello,

I only have my disco2 (2002 - facelift) TD5 Auto since a month or so.

I wanted to check if my auto gearbox had enough oil in it.
(The filter is underway, but didn't want to wait with the check)

Undoing the fillerplug first, as every manual indicates, there was already oil running out of it.
I drove it from the front of the house, to the garage in the garden (50m). So the oil was not warm or anything. The ground was level (I even double checked).

Only way this can be done (overfilling it) is by doing the oilchange via de cooler, not? Not really something an amateur would do.
The car was in P with the handbrake on.

I have let it drip all out. In total 1,5 liters come out.

Did I do something wrong?
Could there be I reason for overfilling the gearbox? (masting an failure when they sold me the car?)
Could this have caused errors that I've at least driven like this for a month? (I don't know how long the previous owner was already driving like this)

Thanks,
Koen

Erm, dunno where to start really.................:doh:

First off, your gearbox was 99% NOT overfull, if you remove the fill plug oil WILL drain out as its not being circulated by the autobox pump as the TD5 level should be checked when the engine is RUNNING.

If you would have done that, you would probably have not lost much if any oil at all.

It is not really possible to overfill the ZF on the TD5 as it will just flow out as quick as you pump it in when it gets to the correct level.

I would strongly suggest (sooner rather than later) you either drain and refill the box with the correct procedure, or refill it / level check using the correct procedure.

All you need to know can be found here

Thanks.
I did read your procedure (even printed the procedure).
But I overlooked the part where the engine should have been running and continu filling up WHILE RUNNING.
I did run it, ran through all the gears, then switched it off, and filled up again (of course nothing needed to be added).

By the way, your procedures are great.

Sorry for my stupid question/problem and easy solution.

Regards, Koen

Hi Koen, did you get your autobox oil level sorted out now?

Cheers mate

Dave

I'm doing it this evening.

....now knowing it should be filled while the engine is running, it shouldn't be a problem.
Does the car need to be in any specific gear? not mentioned in the documentation.
Do I need to fill it again for every gear? or just run down through the gears one by one and back up (2 sec each), then fill it up while engine keeps running?

Thanks, Koen

Hi Koen, this is the procedure:

1. Start with car parked on level ground, cold engine, oil ready and the level/fill plug loosened;

2. Start the engine, select each gearbox position in turn and leave a couple of secs to engage before moving onto the next position;

3. Having gone through all gearbox postions, put the gear lever in N and select neutral on the transfer box (safety precaution), leave the engine running;

4. Now get underneath the car, remove the fill/level plug and top up as neccesary until a bead of oil comes from the hole continuously, then replace plug.

5. Do plug up to correct torque value and you are done.

Don't forget to re-select high on the transfer box and select P on the main 'box.

And relax.....................drink a beer and congratulate yourself.:D:D:D

As the wife is not at home, a good "DUVEL" is next to me... Landy's may be more frequent in the UK, but Belgium has the best beers :D:D

Yeah Duval is not bad but there are loads of good Belgique beers, my local does a great selection of about 30 - some of them up to 12% !!!!
