Hello,
I bought a used Land Rover radio from a breaker for my Disco to swap over the existing Jap one, same model just UK.The plugs on the back were a straight fit.But after fitting could not get any volume at all.
Sound was coming out the speakers but hardly at all. ,I have 4 speakers one in each door.

This was done an audio specialist, not me who said the radio was no good.

So before I buy a new one and loose a bit of originality, am i missing anything please?

I have read about amps in cars need to be disconnected under the seats, but specialist said i do not have any and need a modern radio.
thank you

Thank you....Yes it does have a box with wires in it, but the specialist radio man said it was not a amp it was a ecu?,my Disco is a XS model does not have electric seats or anything.

Hello again,
here is a picture dunce the passenger seat, has a big multicore cable coming out, the radio man said it was a ECU for something, but maybe not I just do not know. Hope you help please? i cannot get a shot of it from the front at all

Oh yep, forgot about the ECU, BCU, whateveritisCU.
Mines a GS and has an aftermarket ICE in it fitted by previous owner, which is OK with a nice big CD player under the driver's seat. (i.e. holds ten disc, or is it 12?)
GS also doesn't have electric much beyond basic. But I know how you feel about a standard radio. I had one in my D1 until the standard disc player went fubar.

Having seen the pic in your next post I think your bloke was right.

Don't worry there are some real ICE experts on here, and yes, if all you can hear is a small sound then obviously somewhere the amp is not working. Daresay someone handy with a soldering iron could fix it, but if I were you I'd take it back to the breaker and ask him either for the amp that should go with it, or your money back or another one and then plug it in infront of him. The one in my D1 had a head unit, a 6 disc CD changer, a box with two subwoofers and a sub-amp in it. But no separate amp.
According to Parkers an XS should have had a CD multichanger. So I think you are being sold a standard level head unit or one that should have an amp but doesn't.

Anyway, best of luck, shouldn't be too hard to solve.:)

Thanks for that..... I think mine is the same as a GS i had a TD5 GS for 10 years and think its just called XS for Japan ...The radio man seems to know his stuff.I bought an English radio book for it and its called a Land Rover R990, it does have a CD option on the front plate, but no CD is fitted. The Jap one was same number R990, but fascia was different ,it did not have any traffic news or the button to get it.But you could turn up the volume and adjust it for bass treble etc .With the new UK one fitted you can get all the stations but very low sound, same on the cassette,The Jap one had an aerial amp which he removed as he said you do not nee that reception is good which it was tune straight in.

I think i have just a duff old radio which is probably 20 years old.....Its so complicated to me...all i want is a few watts, listen to traffic and the foot ball not bothered about anything else... I like listening to the engine which is a bit sad I surpose.

...not sad at all!

Sorry meant to ask if it had a 6 CD changer does that mean it would work?
I am no expert, but when my 6 disc player went wrong it didn't stop the radio working. It happened a while back now so I cannot be sure, but I think I took the player out to try and fix it and during this time it played cassettes and radio fine.
So, short answer, I don't think it'll make any difference.
Sometimes I think i ought to put my old one back in my D1 and use it as a radio and play my MP3 player through the adaptor I have which sits in the Cassette player. It works amazingly well, and looks so right being original equipment.
They do come up on the Bay and places, so many people take them out to fit aftermarket ones. All you need to do is to make sure you get the radio code with it.
Hopefully someone else with knowledge of ICE will see this thread and help you better than I can.
Best of luck.:):):)

Just found this, not all to do with a D2 but some things you could try.https://www.landroversonly.com/threads/radio-works-but-no-sound-out-of-speakers.36010/
also this
https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/highline-radio-works-but-no-sound.327462/
And here's the manual for the radio http://www.fuddymuckers.co.uk/rtfm/...y_2_LRL_0362NAS-2000_In-Car_Entertainment.pdf
you say you have this. It does look as if the R990 is supposed to have an amp but it also appears they are available on the secondhand market, as I hoped.
all the very best

IMO... Just get a cheap aftermarket radio with Bluetooth for hands free phone calls and a USB port for music and charging.

Thanks heading that way to a aftermarket as the radio man said my 2nd hand radio is not working, he said the amp in the radio is not working. But on posting people mention a separate amp which I cannot seem to find.Although this maybe more towards the top models which mine is not.
I checked the Haines book on the Discovery whichI have and it says the CD player was an option on my model.

I think if i could find an amp I might know more, but so far no good.

The thing is the original Jap radio worked fine, just no stations above 90MHz or RDS.This says to me perhaps the replacement radio is duff which i bought.I got it with a code.I have been quoted £234 for a aftermarket Pioneer one fitted with a purpose made fascia to finish off the install.More than i wanted to payout .
Thank you for the links Stanleysteamer that discussion is the same model as mine R990, but seems to have many more connectors.I have two large one and a small yellow one which I am told does the steering wheel controls......all so odd.

Hi,

I don't think your radio man is quite correct, there is nothing wrong with the R990. The R990 needs the under-seat amp, it doesn't drive the speakers directly which is why you only hear a very low output, you are hearing the very small signal intended to go to the under-seat amp which then drives the speakers, so you've only really got half the system. The wiring is shown in the circuit diagram section of RAVE.

Whether your model would have the wiring built in, I don't know but I doubt it as your speaker wiring goes to the dashboard, not under the seat. May be easiest to keep searching for an aftermarket one at the right price rather than rewiring and sourcing the missing amp.

Cheers.

Thanks PP,
I was a bit concerned as most functions worked. Can i ask why the original Jap one worked please?
Is the picture i attached the amp? under the passenger seat I have a metal plate screwed to the floor with a multicore cable going in to something.I cannot see much of it.I would need to remove the seat and then the plate. The radio man told me this was not it and this thing was a ECU, but the cable colours look like the same in part as under the dash for the radio. As i took out a R990 Jap radio, then put in a UK version I thought it would work the same. The connectors went straight on the pins with no problem.

I do really appreciate your help. The existing aftermarket one is a bit high for me to afford.

No problem. Is yours an automatic? The ECU (EAT) for the automatic transmission is also under the front passenger seat. Looking at RAVE, the EAT ECU is under the bracket and the amp is mounted on top. If yours is an auto, that ECU is for the auto box.

Was the Jap R990 a "Land Rover" unit? The Land Rover R990 is made by Alpine who made some really good kit in the past. My thought is that the R990 you had was nothing to do with LR and the model number was just a coincidence. Most "radios" have the power amplifier built in, so no need for the under-seat thingy, and will drive the speakers directly. For some time now car audio connectors have been standardised, probably why your "Jap R990" just plugged into the LR loom.

I have an Auto Disco 2 with the original R990 so I could stick my head under the front seat and have a look if there is still confusion.

It would probably be worth your while getting RAVE (it's free, you need a Windows PC, but I don't have a link to it from memory) which does show you where all the bits and pieces are.

Here is a copy from Rave and 99% sure i have the mid/base ICE, as the description of things fit,I only have 4 speakers. I am going to have another fiddle with it today, may try re install the jap radio and buy a £10.00 convertor,I do not have a code for the Jap one but i see firms advertising the code service,so may do that. I cannot se the amp mentioned but your description PP fits spot on, great help.To have a aftermarket put in is quite costly for me and due to health reasons, not good bending under dashboards. doing it myself ,I can lie under the truck okay!

Thanks PP it is an automatic.I will photo graph the Jap radio back bit.I think its a genuine LR unit.Only difference I can see is on the fascia the Jap one does not have a RDS button.
I have got RAVE which is great ,think our postings crossed. If you could look under the seat that would be great please.

I've just had a grovel under the seat and yes, the power amp is on top of the bracket in your photo, you can't miss it! The auto box ECU is below the bracket.

Mine is a 2004 and I don't know what changes may have happened since 2001, but I assume your Jap R990 has the power amp built in, which is why it worked.

Just had a look at the circuit diagram for the earlier models and the Base and Mid Line "Radio Cassettes" had the amplifier built in, the "High Line" used the under-seat amps.

Your jap radio does not have the range a European one does as they use different ranges of frequencies or wavelengths or whatever they call them.
I am convinced, as I think is PP may be, that you need an amp which is not expensive and you could fit it where ever is convenient to you.
Here are a load.
https://www.google.com/search?q=car.....69i57j0l7.5569j0j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Then you could run the existing head unit with the existing speakers. All you need is a lead to power the amp up whenever the radio is turned on, an earth, and leads from the head unit to the amp and from the amp to the speakers. Not too difficult and a shed load easier than wiring in a new CD player using the existing wiring for the old one, as I have had to do that and I really had to draw loads of diagrams and scratch my head a lot.
Hope you get this sorted out!
