Well a few months ago I made what I thought was a safer decision for my family as the old disco has a few quirks shall we say and we live in the country I got a 3 year old Disco 3. Now just after its 30k service it needs some bushes on the suspension arm replaced as its knocking plus there is a worrying vibration via the steering wheel when you take your foot of the accelerator. What i dont understand is my old 300tdi still has original front bushes on (ok rplaced the rear last year) but its got 115k on the clock and 17years old plus been abused as a offroader / family car. So whats happening to the new discos are they not build to last or are they just to heavy and complicated. Must say I prefer the old bus hence got a 20 year old one on ebay and going for a rebuild to replace the D3

Must say the power is great you can actually overtake and its much quieter you can have a conversation. After doing the brakes it seems easy enough to work on however all the electrics etc could cause problems over time for the home mechanic. Iv got 2 old disco 1's hoping to get round to a rebuild over the winter.

We've replaced a few bushes on D3's they do go quite early but usually around 70k remember they weigh a good 3 tonnes and so there's a lot of pressure on the bushes and they have independent suspension which requires more bushing.

They're a brilliant machine don't get put off by electrics, they rarely fail TBH

cheers 200tdi first bit of confidence iv had! Not very convincing that your profile pic is a defender lol! Did you do the bushes yourself? Is it worth polybushing?

I've got a 97 reg 300tdi but looking at a D3, talked to lots of owners and I will certainly be polybushing mine when I get it. Still looking to keep the D1 as a toy to abuse but I'm looking forward to the refines of a newer model. Things I've been told are high bush, brakes and tyre wear... Prob worth some decent AT tyres and brakes should be easy enough to replace at home.

I was told that its more the nuts and bolts that rust on the d3. So give it a good waxoyl as it can turn simple jobs into a nightmare as you have to destroy parts that were otherwise good to get bolts and bushes out.

Well I can tell you brakes are a doddle and got a sensor from Britpart and no problems. Only done it as the Stealers wanted 400 for brakes. Id agree with the tyres wear I got mine for a dealer and got new tyres fitted only done 7k miles and guess il be replacing them soon however the Dealer did put on cheap ones so will be replacing them with decent ones as my old disco had done 40k miles so far on BF goodrich at's and still look good. Also agree about the rust bolts been looking at the bush replacement as again stealers quoting crazy money - the bolts do look in bad condition for a 31/2 to 4 year car but there is a kit on ebay for 2 new lower arms with bushes and all the bolts for 350 and genuine LR parts too! rather do both sides at the same time to keep it all the same but do I just take my arms off and polybush or get new arms. Ah decisions
