Morning all, having sold my disco 300tdi a year or so ago due to it not being practical for kids being a 3dr, for the last year iv been driving a rav4 of all things, iv been anchoring for another disco, iv had plenty of old landys and touch wood always been reliable but but we now do a fair few long holiday trips as well as it being my daily drive, just trying to put my mind at rest that I'm not mad as there dosnt seem to be many talking about them any more, the one one done a deal on is a 1999 fsh low miles
Thanks

They are still about mate but cared ones are getting hard to find. No doubt all will have rust in places. I don't think a well cared for one would cause issues mechanically but so many are rusty. Check rear cross member, alpine window surrounds, bottom of pillars, inner wings, suspension mounting components, boot floor. Easier to say what not to check. If it were me, I'd hold out for a standard one that's had cash thrown at it and a middle class life then spend a month or so treating and preventing rot prior to you making it your daily

Thanks chaps, to be honest don't no what I'm worrying about just something the wife said about being stranded in the middle of nowhere with two kids, as some of the places we visit in bad weather we can drive well over an hour without passing a soul. Anyway I'm buying it!
Cant wait to have a clean untouched disco 1 with just a couple of purposeful mods, ladder roof rack ideally safety devices style one, spotlights and maybe all terrains.
Hopefully iv attached a pick of my vizsla for you mate, only got a couple on this phone, unfortunately we lost her about a year and half ago so just got the working cocker, she was a cracking dog although hard work!
Cheers

Ahh beaut sorry yoh lost her but good to she made old age. You'll have to start a project thread when you get It. Im interested to see what you get. I wish I knew when buying mine what I know now. Oh well I bought it to do a thorough resto anyway hence the name haha

Cheers pal, have you done a thread on yours.
Cant wait to build a standard ish looking clean disco, my previous discos defender have been modified quite heavily with the usual off road mods so be nice to keep this original looking, although it will still get worked

Yes but you'll either fall asleep or go insane before you get through the whole thread lol. It's in members projects- steep learning curve.

I get if with the standard thing. Mine will be quite modified but if it were a daily I'd be thinking almost oem+ as the v dub kids would say

Had a quick browse through, certainly a long thread! Looks like your doing a good job and learning plenty along the way. Bet your itching to get it back on the road

Ahh thank you. I am looking forward to getting on the road but it's a journey and one I hope to be proud of. I also enjoy it and learning the fab skills. It helps that it doesn't have to be shiny, pretty and within microns of even a mil when rebuilding. Get the cleanest one you can mate and I can guarantee anything that needs doing people will have done before and can advise. I've had a lot of info and help.

I just want spring now. I can work on both projects then for long days

Morning, ok so things didn't quite go to plan, after speaking with the chap all week who to be fair seems to no his stuff about landrovers I was confident I'd found a good one but after a 5 hour round trip I returned landroverless. The first annoyance was I got there and he was a dealer although his advert wasn't a dealer listing and I really don't like buying from dealers as they can't be trusted don't no the vehicle and worst of all lie! Although he was quite nice!
It was perfect for what I wanted so I took it for a test drive it was all fine but then noticed it was pulling to the left quite bad so I checked brakes and at low speed it pulled even harder to the left, as it had just been moted a few bells rang so I got back and started having a good look around, first I noticed both front tyres were bold on both inside edge roughly a third across the tyre which is a failure, he's ses he was told they were borderline.
Nightmare checking the chassis as it had a lot of underseal but it was sempt good until I got around rear spring mout area including a bit that had been filled with foam and undersealead over!
All in all everything else was good, sills had been done with box section, body wise arches etc was good. Realy wanted to bring it back but lost faith abit
My concern is what's it like under the underseal
I did mot history checks and nothing out the ordinary.
Iv left it that he's taking it into the garage tomorrow to have it checked and any welding done.
If it was a cheap disco I'd of snapped it up but it's not I after having a few discos I wanted a keeper low miles full history and a good base vehicle to improve.
What due chaps think

From what you have said then without any doubt what so ever you did the right thing walking away. Chassis filled with expanding foam and covered over is a MASSIVE no no andcoupled with the other issues you have pointed out it should not have passed an MOT. Be patient and don't get ripped off.

Cheers fella, really not prepared to be ripped off, you wouldn't think traders would be stupid enough to be using dodgy mot's especially on enthusiast type cars that will be checked over

For want of better words. **** that. Like mentioned before, I bought with heart and thinking ahh it can't be that bad but it really can. I can even predict how it looks around the rear spring mount. There's a few around mate, you'll find one. Underseal just screams hiding things to me now. I know it isn't always but you just can't see what your getting if it's got thick black sludge all over it
