Hoping somebody can give me a good explanation to help me, this is the first auto I’ve owned. I’ve heard a lot of people mention torque converter lockup.. could somebody please explain to me how I will know when the torque converter is locked or isn’t locked? (What symptoms I will expirience)… disco 1 300tdi auto

cheers

300 auto about 52mph, which is a real **** in 50mph roadworks or when towing a heavy trailer!
it basically means the tc is now solid with no slip.

How will I know when it locks? Will the gearbox act differently? I’ve read up that when torque converter is unlocked if you take your foot off your pedal when driving the Revs will drop to idle? I just want to get a understanding of what happens when the torque converter is locked and unlocked

Around 53-54mph on a light throttle u will feel it as the engine revs will drop by around 500 RPM.
If u let the vehicles speed drop to around 50mph the torque converter will unlock the same as dropping down a gear and the engine revs will of course then increase.
If with ‘pedal to the metal’ accelerating therefore going beyond the lock up speed the torque won’t lock up until u ease off the throttle or on its own at something like 80-90mph max.
The exact numbers on gear changing, lock up and kick down are stated in the LR workshop manual.
