Hi Chaps,
Have done a search on here and can not really find an answer.
disco 300tdi auto edc.
It takes a long time to start and you have to turn it over for a fair while before it starts.
When it does start there is a lot of white/grey smoke untill it gets warm then the smoke goes. In the last 2 weeks we have replaced the head gasket changed the timming belt and checked and re checked the timming.changed all filters and oil.

Can anyone shed any light on why it is not starting well and smoking a lot?

Thanks in advance

A search for white or grey smoke will provide the answer

Depending on colour/smell it'll probably be just condensation in the exhaust or you need new glow plug or two ;)
Considering the length of time it takes to start. More likely the latter. :tea:

If it is an 300tdi auto it will probably have electronic engine control, in which case it may be the edc getting an incorrect signal from one of the sensors and fueling the engine incorrectly.

Check for overfueling anorl -;)

and a new battery may help - a diesel disco should start even if no glow plugs are working...

Thanks guys,
Took the heater plugs out to test them and only 2 working. So have ordered a new set.

You have found your problem,EDC auto's need their glow plugs to start from cold, the grey smoke is unburnt fuel.
The mechanically injected TDI's have a larger start quantity which will fire the engine even if the glows dont work.

Fitted a new shiny set of glow plugs today and still the same.
Like i siad once it has started and warm up it is fine.
No smoke and starts first flick of the key for the rest of the day.

I had this same problem for the first time yesturday with my es model(auto) 300tdi, with the blue smoke.WhenI pulled off it chucked out the smoke dor about 100 meters then went away.
Since I have had it (since september last year) it has alway struggled to start in the cold, what I do now is allow the plugs to heat up three times before attempting to start it.
By the way I have 3 working glow plugs now as the 4th snapped when trying to remove it s think I will just leave it in situ as cheaper to just leave it.

Have you checked/replaced the leak off pipes, air leaks when these pipes are perished will cause bad starting.

Might be worth decoking the injector tips and putting injector cleaner through them.:)

im sure that someone on here has done a mod with a resistor on one of the temp sensors so that the pump is fooled into thinking that the temp is colder than what it really is and so injects more fuel and starts easier?
