Get an axle from a disco - got mine for £41.

Is the disco axle a straight swap?? and is it geared the same and as strong as a defender item?.

Yes.
Only thing is, if you get a 300TDi axle for your 200TDi, you'll need to swap the diff flange from your existing axle onto the Disco one. If it's from a 200TDi Disco it's a dead straight swap.
I decided to refurbish the Disco axle before fitting it - new seals, bearings, discs, caliper pistons, re-paint etc, but that's up to you.
Remember that the Disco back axle will provide a HUGE extra braking effort compared to a Defender disc brake axle. It will probably apply as much braking force as the Def90 FRONT axle.
This is amazing for STOPPING (the general idea!) especially with a heavy trailer on, BUT, you will need to take care on wet and slippy roads as you will be able to lock up the back wheels if you brake hard.
Luckily for us permanent 4x4 people this won't happen as easily as it would in any 4x2 vehicle, but you do need to take care as even ONE back wheel locking up can be a problem.
Discomania's Def 90 used to be mine and I fitted a Disco back axle to it. The improvement in braking power was almost beyond belief. This is a job every Def 90 owner with drum back brakes should do as soon as possible.

Well hi there Mr Redhand Sir!
I'm fine, and I and my Disco are enjoying our superior feelings on the roads up here. I can't say two inches of snow makes much difference to us, but it about paralyses the rest of the traffic.
It was an AOL problem that shut me out. My ISP is now BT, and MUCH better.
Up here in the middle of Scotland we seem to have ascaped the worst of the snow so far. "Bring it on!" says I.

We seem to have missed the worst of it in Hull as well, though the rest of the area is getting it pretty bad.

Don't be put off a 300TDi axle - changing the diff input flange is dead simple and you'll have a much wider choice of axles.

i put both 300tdi disco axles under mine, has kept the brakes nice and balanced, and they are well sharp.
What a show-off swank!
If you have both those axles on a Defender there won't be much can out-brake it.
The difference when towing a heavy trailer is absolutely amazing, especially if the trailer doesn't have any brakes ... not that I'm saying my big trailers don't have good brakes mind ... it's just that sometimes they don't seem to do a lot.

aye it is good, ive also got braided hoses all round. Want some EBC pads soon, as the ones on it are getting a bit thin. Also will need a new master cylinder at some point an all.

Is there any way of getting rount this problem?
I'd like the extra stoping power but dont fancy swaping ends if I need to stop quick!

You could fit a regulator, instead of just a T piece in the rear brake line, but it's not a problem for me. My front brakes are in good nick and the twin pot calipers at the front, coupled with the single pot ones at the rear are balanced OK.
