dipstick blowing oil 300tdi

Its common for 300tdi head gaskets go at the rear of no 4 cyliinder. They can blow straight out the back and melt pipes/wires or more common blow in to the 8th push rod hole. Youd swear the engine was knackered but a 20 quid head gasket cures it :)

OK so I'll check tapets, and i take it a compression test would also check for head gasket? Or any other signs, no bubbles in header tank, and no creamy oil. I just don't wanna strip engine down in case the wreckers wont take it back after messing with it etc.

Thanks for the replies

compression check would show if 1 or more cylinders produced less pressure, ie head gasket leaking,bores/rings worn, it could also show poor valves ,nobody will take it back once youve disturbed it, if youve just bought it talk to them about swapping it

Bought it couple of months ago for 400 (as rebuilding a defender from scratch) and got it from a local wrecker in liverpool area,
I'm gna have someone have a look at it before we start un bolting everything and take it back as he said it was a good runner, or swap it :)

Good luck taking it back if you've had it a couple of months, I'd had mine just over 30 days before I stripped it to get it in (eBay) so I just had to take it on the chin. It was sold as 130K, good runner, using no oil or water. When I finally got it to pieces the bores were as shiny as mirrors, the manifold was cracked and the oil looked prehistoric so new piston rings, rehoned and everything taken to pieces, cleaned and oiled and it starts and runs like a treat. Fortunately I only paid 230 quid and I'd got a spare manifold so it wasn't to bad.

Lesson learned for next time though
