sometimes when i turn on lights my side lights work fine as do the main beams but the dipped lights can take a few seconds to come on i have no faults appearing so i am thinking a relay could be in trouble or is there something else

There may be a relay or power transistor in the BECM,I dont remember there being an external one

Could well be a bad connection. Check for wet carpet in the drivers side footwell. The lights are driven by MOSFETS in the BECM.

i did have to replace the orings in the heater matrix about a month ago the carpet was very wet i never thought of that being my problem i will check the connections as i had a similar problem with the connections inside the drivers door few months back they got wet and connections were very bad so i could have the same problem again datatek forgive a stupid question but what are mosfets??

Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistors. Used instead of relays to operate the lights. If your carpet was wet, it's possible the BECM is full of condensation or the external connectors have some corrosion.

no water or dampness present no corrosion i had a spare on/off switch for the lights and a spare indicator/head-dipped cluster lever so i fitted them to see if it will make a difference but i dont think thats my problem .

Might pay you to take the lid off the BECM and look for damp or signs of overheating on the MOSFETS. Check the bolted connections to the BECM are tight and clean.
