diffs

will the diffs from a l reg disco fit my 76 s3, if so how hard is it and whats involved?

if yours are 24 splines then yes but if they are 10 spline then no unless you change the half shafts and hube flanges ?

i might be wrong on this but are 24 spline series half shafts not only 24 spline at the wheel end and 10 spline at the diff end? the front axle i took off my lightweight was like that but its really weird!!

disco half shafts are 24 spline at both ends on the later models, definatly the L reg ones anyway. I got my disco 10 spline diffs from a J reg one at a scrappy's. the hardest bit was dismantling the old disco as it was made from mud and cowpat!

i think lightweight axles are diferent to series axles early series 11/111 have 10 splines and late s111 /90/110/r/r /disco have 24 spline thought yours was std series truck ?

Series half shafts are all 10 spline at the diff end.

Unless you've got Rover axles at both ends then the diffs won't fit. If you've got a SWB you should be O.K. If LWB then probably not. I would not recommend this conversion if you've got a standard 2 1/4 engine, and you do or intend to do off-roading/greenlaning, or very heavy towing, because you'll loose the low gearing. When off roading the low gearing is very useful for going down very steep slopes under control and esp. with a diesel the Landy will not have the power to get up some very steep slopes.

discos on an l plate can vary slightly as it was on the change. i have seen a 200 with early 10 spline axles which is correct but also 200 with 300 24 spline axles. from the factory not been replaced so check the ones you are going to get.
10 spline disco/rangey halfshafts should be one piece and both the same front and rear and rounded.
later 24 spline will be similar to defender on the front with a dust cap on the end and the rear will be larger and almost looks flush with the hub. like a lightweight series.
as said before all series will be 10 spline at the diff end. 24 spline was only introduced to discos and rangeys between 93 and 94.

some late s3 had 24 splines at the hub and 10splines diff he you get disco 10 spline they will fit but you will lose your low gearing get an over drive

yeah i had one with 24 spline drive flanges, think it was 79 onwards. not concerned about that here though, just the diff end.
