I modded my handbrake to cable operated with car typed lever, mounted just to the left of drivers seat on top of seat box. I have no need for a center seat and have a bass bin there anyway. It was easy to do, I forget now which lever and cable I used- But could dig through receipts etc if you get stuck.

Hi chaps just an update on the disco transfer box!
Been in hospital for a few weeks so been unable to let you know how it went.
110 transfer box came out no problems. With the box on the floor Using the defender hand brake and linkage it can be located on the disco transfer box in the same position it just needs 2 holes drilled and tapped to receive 2 location bolts, by far the quickest way to mod the hand brake without changing to a car one or relocating all together.
Box back in usual manor linking everything back together handbrake, hi/low, diff lock etc.
Took her for a test drive and she runs like a dream cruising really nice 55-60mph with very low revs, no over heating anymore at 50mph.
I do own a sanky wide track which I took to the dump the other day to unload! Did not struggle to tow it at all still plenty of power in hand, for me personally it's been a worth while mod and of course mpg has gone up which is just an added bonus!

I missed this. Well done for swapping the tranny box its most likley you had a 1.6 or 1.4:1 transferbox.

1.2:1 is a better ratio however towing something really heavy and run taller tyres you will notice the difference however a disco box was the best upgrade I made before I went a different route.

Old transfer box was purchased as soon as it came out. Sorry!
May be interested in other items tho. May be looking to put mine back to a hard top or poss truck cab!

There should be the sticker just by the handbrake drum with the info on it but probably like mine it fell of ages ago! I was quite lucky as through some investigation I found out mine was from a 110 so it was a no brainier for me! You may have to research some posts to see how many revolutions of your prop shaft to your wheel to find out the ratio of your box!

nobbyraw: What engine does your Defender have in it?

I have a 1986 Ninety (so it must have a 1.6 transfer box) and have been considering doing exactly what you have done. Replacement diffs from a Range Rover are not easy to come by in New Zealand so the transfer box is really my only option. The problem is that my vehicle has a non-turbo diesel in it (a Nissan LD28) and I'm not sure whether it would handle the higher transfer ratio or not.

To be honest I think it would struggle with a 1.2 disco box on there, I don't think you would ever get out of 3 rd gear with a non turbo engine!
You could how ever drop in a defender one with a ratio of 1.4 so sort of a half way compromise!

If only; trying to find any defender running gear in New Zealand is next to impossible. No one wrecks them as they are so sought after and we are a small country so there are not that many around.

The engine in my Ninety is very solid and it will probably run forever, but it is very low on power unfortunately.
It seems that there was a period when people put LD28's into series and defenders in New Zealand (simply for better fuel economy I think). Does anyone run series or Defenders with the Nissan LD28 engine in the UK?

Hi landyjd
To be honest there seems to be all manor of engines in series and 90/ defender, some do run nissan, not sure which! Then there is Perkins, again not sure which.
I'm running the genuine 200tdi in my defender which I think is the best engine landrover ever put in to a defender, if it's looked after they are bomb proof ( my opinion.)
The most common engine swap or convention for a 90 is a 200tdi from a discovery 1 with conversation kit from Steve Parker. It's a simple job and very effective. Last year my friend sold his 200 tdi engine to a chap in the states he paid £300 for the engine and then whatever it was for shipping he also got the Steve Parker kit sent to the states too!
Maybe you could look down this route or see if there are any discoverys going cheap where you are?
Hope this is of some help? Nobby

Landryjd I have sent transfer boxes th the states it was z
£60 shipping I would have thought it wild be similar price to NZ
