Difficulty starting the TD5

So many possibilities with the td5 fuel system but yours seems to get air in when standing.
I found changing the injector washers, cleaning up the diesel filter housing take care to put in a new bleed valve, and overhaul the pressure regulator sorted mine.
Take care not to let the little filter in the head fall out when you do the regulator, they seem to have a death wish.

Well this morning we appear to have made a little progress, the truck started but ran very lumpy until i blipped the throttle then it ran ok (so were back to the stage i was at when i first bought the truck about a month or so ago (the problem started getting progressively worse after i bought it)

When started it runs very rough and throws a load of white smoke out the back

Thanks for the reply, the FPR is next on my list as it did appear to be quite wet around that area

Its all starting to make sense now.... pulled the glow plugs and all 4 are completely dead, tested them across a good battery and they didnt even get warm.

The wiring that goes to each plug disintegrated in my hands so need to replace these, i tried looking on ebay but cant seem to find anything, any ideas?

The glow plug leads are integral part of the main engine harness, you better bite the bullet and replace the whole thing cos i'm sure other wires/plugs are "tenderised" too, i replaced mine few years ago as preventative maintainance cos i didnt like how it looked albeit the engine ran well without issues... so i thought untill i replaced the harness cos it was like somebody changed that engine, huge improvement in power and throttle response thanked just to the new harness, i checked the old one after that and beside some ''carbonised" wires it was clearely visible with magnifier that the pins in all the sensor's plugs were loosened

fortunately mine is pre-facelift so a harness is not a killer for such complex bit(not cheap though https://www.lrdirect.com/YSB108710-supplied-by-britpart-branded-oem.html ... when i bought it few years ago was 180quid ) but for facelifts it's more than double that price:confused:

I may need to pop down the breakers yard and snip the bits of wire i require, the truck was only £400 and has done 180,000 miles so i'm not keen to spend a fortune on it.

After replacing the glow plugs unfortunately the problem is still not cured, i tested the new plugs staight across a battery and although they get hot they dont glow, they are cheap brit part items... shall i send them back?

Well ive finally sorted it!
sent the crappy brit part plugs back which took 20 seconds to glow, didnt learn my lesson and bought bearmach glow plugs which took 10 seconds to glow, and have now bought some bosch duraterm glow plugs which are red hot in just 2 seconds

if you can learn anything from this thread, you just cant skimp when it comes to glow plugs, the relay only gives them about 4 seconds of juice and it just isn't on long enough for cheap plugs to get hot.
