Any ideas what I should be looking at?

It used to shift to low with little effort on the lever (just like it still does to select high). This symptom started in the heat wave we had this summer while I was setting up an off road event. At the time I assume it might have been down to the heat. However it has continued to be an issue.

It does select select low, but as you can see the the video below, in order to move the shifter across the H gate, it needs quite a lot of force.

Is the lock button on the lever not working properly ie not disengaging fully to let the lever move

It's a pretty simple mechanism but I suppose the pivot points could have corroded.

Now you mention it, the lever on the gearknob is not as free moving as it used to be, you could almost waggle it about with the tips of your fingers as you drove. It now has a much stiffer movement. But it does seem fine for every other action such as coming out of park or crossing the neutral gate. Even Low -> High is fine, it is just High -> Low.

I guess. Tbh. haven't ever looked at the mechansim on a p38 before.

I use Low pretty often, when this symptom developed it was mid summer and the heatwave. I'd probably put it into Low once or twice a day for the past 5 days, then suddenly it started doing this.
