I have recently had my rear diff expire (input shaft bearings) on my 300tdi, it would appear someone has changed the rear axle at some point for a 10 spline item.

I have sourced a new diff which is a 24 spline diff including half shafts, the old diff was a 10 spline.

Im not sure whether my font diff is 10 or 24 as of yet, I plan on stripping it down tomorrow to check, my question however is if my front diff is a 10 spline, will I be ok running a 24 on the back and keeping the 10 on the front ? I figured that as long as the diff ratios were the same then it would be ok ?

Cheers

you willl need to sorce stub ends too or else
below is a pic of a 24 spline stub

below is a pic of the gap when you try and bolt a 24 spline shaft to a 10 spline hub

below is a pic of a 10 spline hub you will notice how far the bearing thread sticks out compared to pic 1

you will see that the stub bearing thread is to long and hits the cup of the 24 spline half shaft, thats why 10 spline shafts have big dome shape ends.

I replaced one of my stub ends last week, which i think is for a 24 spline as it had the needle bearing where as the old one didn't! That was on the nearside, guess ill have to find another one!

I`v got a 10 spline on the front of mine and a 24 spline Salisbury on the back so you won`t have any issues

If it's a TDi 300 I'm almost 100% sure that the std diff's are 24 spline. As I recall it was only the early TDi 200 that were fitted with 10-spline units.
