Thanks Wammers.
But getting the repair done is problamatic.
Isn't there a Defender/discovery that has a matching 3rd member for P38?

Plenty of S/H diffs available on the net. Problem is they are an unknown quantity and postage would kill you. Specially if they were not as good as described.

Hi Guys,
Finally got it out. The crown wheel has 3-4 teeth broken at two places. Nothing wrong with the pinion gear just few scratch marks but no broken teeth. Thanks Wammers for identifying it at the very begining.

Broken pieces were in the bottom of the diff, little deeper than the drain.
Wonder why its a 2 pin version in rear.
Now to look for a diff. Anything in Defender diffs that matching P38?
Otherwise I will have to import which is prohbitively expensive. Arghh....

Could you have a word with a breakers like Emmots and see if they can post out just a crown wheel? Would that keep the cost down? Or it bribes as well at your end?

A used crown wheel is no good without the pinion. Mixing new and or used parts is a sure way of getting music from the rear end. New pinion and crown wheel should be fitted together.

You mean that the Defender 110 crown wheel and the pinion drive is same set used in the P38 though the 3rd member as a whole is not same and cannot be replaced by one another.
But the Ascropt site sells the 3rd member as a common unit for both P38 and the Defender.

Rear diff for 2002 on 110 and P38 are the same diff apparently.

Went through a few Defender rear diffs found two problems.
1. The flange is circular instead of square in shape. So propeller will not fit.
2. No provision to fit the harmonic balancer.

Yr advise pls.
