Need a bit of help hear. Friend of mine has just spent £1450 on new gearbox for 06 plate Freelander. Gear box was originally repaired by garage prior to it breaking down completely. Garage said that due to the rear tyres being 2mm more worn than the front, this is what destroyed the gearbox. Is this right??? Do all 4 wheels on a Freelander need to be the same diameter??:confused:

Ideally all 4 wheels should have same tyres fitted with the newest fitted to the rear. And yes, you can destroy various items within the drivetrain by fitting smaller diameter tyres to the rear.

Do all 4 wheels on a Freelander need to be the same diameter?

on the mk1 .. yes

on the mk2 .. i don't know .. but suspect it's not as critical ..

whatever the case "2mm" difference is a tad exaggerated methinks ..
have heard of "5mm" being the limit on the mk1 .. but 2mm ????

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
maybe phone a reputable LR dealership/garage .. and ask them
and/or google the query 'n see what comes up
if it's a freelander2 .. be sure to put that in the search text box
Does he mean IRD as in the transfer box rather than gearbox?
As above, need to know if it's a Freelander 1 or 2.
Freelander 2, it isnt as critical.
Although front and rear tyres tend to wear at the same rate on a Fl2. This means mismatched tyres dont tend to happen to often. I'm sure if it is an issue , it will become more prominent as the cars get older.
As above I don't think its as critical on a FL2, it uses a Haldex clutch to drive the rear wheels, and unless it senses loss of traction it doesn't engage, the FL2's turn in very tightly with no loss of speed and very easily, as there isn't a viscous pulling up tight.
Having said that, if I owned a FL2 I would still probably keep them all fairly equal.
I seem to recall reading the FL2's are in 4WD when waiting to pull away, if it senses no loss of traction 4WD is immediately disabled..
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong..
Thanks for all your feedback guy's. It is a Mk2. The rear tyres were brand new. the front ones had the 2mm wear.
