Afternoon,

Got a 300tdi ABS D1,

its loosing diff oil out the ends of the axle and I dont think I can justify constantly adding EP90 G4 on a frequent basis,

Whats the best way to replace the seals or is it a garage jobby ?

Should note its not my main drive, but it did go wading last week, think water got in the diff and buggered the seal,

Any ideas helpful !

First of all check for play in the wheel bearings on that wheel. Then...
Wheel off, drive flange off, remove the 2 caliper bolts and carefully tie the caliper out of the way without knackering your brake pipes, use a drift/screwdriver to bend the hub locking washer straight, remove outer lock nut, remove locking washer, remove inner nut, put hands at 3 and 9 o'clock on brake disc and pull it towards you off the hub being careful not to let the wheel bearing fall on the floor.
The seal you need to replace is on the back of the hub, whilst you are there you can change your wheel bearings if they are in poor condition, and your stub axle if the seal land is fooked.

Basically you want to follow all the steps in a haynes manual to replace your rear wheel bearings, but don't actually remove the bearings (unless they are knackered)

Think its fair to say theres alot of contamination,

its got an MOT in a months time,

Looks like I've got to take the whole lot apart and replace/clean up as much of it as I can and get the bearings and seal replaced !

The wheel was clean before I left work with it today, been falling out everywhere lol

Got all the bits ready for a weekend push,

Only to find I cant top up my diff because I've left the tool at a mates (see my mates a cock thread),

Whats the size of the square and its there a particular name for a tool to do it as I plan to just pick up another rather then screw about trying to get mine back off me mate ?

Should note that the previous one I had I had borrow my the dark corners of my step dads garage so I'm not going to ask him in case of grief lol

Heres my disco yesterday changing it all ;)
So wheels off, drive flandges undone and shafts pulled out, hubs off using 52mm box spanner then stub axels held on by the 5 bolts, replaced gaskets, stub all the seals expecially the hub seal, and new bearings and brakes for good measure :)
