Hi again all. been advised today that the clunk when i pull.away or change gear is my front diff worn basicaly so my question is would it be better to change the diff only or replace the front axle to be safe and use mine for parts. and where can i get a cheap diff or axle. thanks

Well the blokw who told me said it was diff, its not ujs checked front and back and i have lots of play in the front prop ie i can turn it a fair bit by hand and it clunks bad when i pull away or change gear due to it taking up the slack. and it vibrates when i get to 40mph and wont disappear until i drop below 40.

what engine gear box has it ,have you removed hub caps and looked at shafts and drive members,A frame ball joint on rear axle ,are ujs seized need to remove one end of prop to check they all move freely

I havent checked the shafts etc as i didnt want to strip it down if i dnt need to coz of work. i dont know anybody where i live as we moved so dnt know any good know how people. lol

I thought id have to strip it down right past the swivel etc. so what do u suggest i do then coz il go at it tomoro just not sure whar or where to start

prise of hub caps and check for play in splines ,with a long pry bar check rear a frame ball joint for play ,remove pto cover on rear of t/box and check spline wear, some one rocking drive with clutch helps for splines and somone rocking vehicle helps for finding loose bushes ball joints etc you just feel each part play can be felt

So when i open the pto cover what should i expect to see? And lets say the shafts under the plastic caps have movement what wohld my next course of action be. im new to this bit iv had discos before but never had this problem.

Not sure if its linked or not bit i also got a vibration that goes through the car when i get to 40 and wnt disappear unless i go slowrr than 40 any ideas. checked props, ujs, a frame ball joint and all seems fine.

Well the front seem ok. i havent checked the back doing it like you said though il try that tomoro. its not the a frame joint, so what else could it be. also when it vibrates it will also stop if i coast. stumped really

any 10 spline diff rrc disco or defender,it is normally best to fit one in front thats been in the front but not essential as front and rear are the same diff

Would it definatly be a 10 spline diff. Im pretty sure its not wheel balancing it feels a different kind of vibration and its been parked up for the last year almost for some reason.

Not being funny mate but a Haynes manual would be a very good investment !! Jack up front drivers wheel , chock rear wheel , go underneath take a screwdriver with you ! Now look at the front propshaft grab hold of it and prise at it between the universal joints if either joint has any. Free movement in any way then it's probably in need of replacement , if you can find any movement then remove the four prop bolts on one end of the prop now you can really feel for wear ! If any play at all is present in these u/j joints they sound terrible !! Check the rear as well in the same way ! The diff on yor vehicle is adjustable in regards the input to ring gear mesh !! The bearings are also adjustable !! It means removing hubs, drive flanges, half shafts and finally diff !! It's not hard to adjust a diff you just need to know how ! If you know what I mean !! Oh and release the hand brake when checking prop etc this allows you to turn the shafts and diff etc don't forget the wheel chocks
