just bought a 2003 td5 discovery after having a 300tdi discovery. on the 300 tdi you simply pushed the high/low gear stick over to the left to engage diff locks. with this there isnt that facility. how do you engage them? or does it not have them?

There was a time where the Disco did not have diff locks and it sounds like yours is one of them. It will have TC instead.
 
Land Rover dropped the Difflock in favour of Traction control on the TD5
but after customer complaints it became a dealer option on the new cars.

certain TD5 gear cases have the difflock inside but no lever, you can buy the lever from ashcrofts if you want to add difflock

how do you find out if its there or not? dont wanna buy as lever for nothing lol.
 
yes it has traction control, but it seems crap in ice, my 300tdi had no trouble going up my drive but the td5 doesnt want to.

the trick to traction control is a very steady throttle and a higher gear, I been up a steep icy hill no problems, Traction Control goes mental but still pulls you up!
 
I was asking the very same question about lack of Diff lock at my local Landy indie and they said the trick to traction control is to Blip the throttle but I have not yet tried their theory out yet .:scratching_chin:
 
Hi,

The best way to tell (just in case your Disco had a replacement transfer box in the past) is to get under your car, get your hand on top off the transfer box if you have a linkage stick, sticking out of the top that is not joined to anything, then you have the diff lock inside. If it has a blanking plate......you don't

Traction control is better than diff lock (here comes a big debate) the secret is to apply slightly more throttle as soon as a wheel starts to slip/spin, teh system works by using the ABS system to apply the brake to the slipping wheel, and by braking the diff in that axle will transfer the power to the other wheel(s)
I have seen a demonstration where a Disco had three wheels sitting on small roller bogeys or trollys, and the car drove using only one wheel with traction . . .
A conventiaonl diff lock locks the cetre diff, but it only takes one wheel on each axle to spin and your stuck !!!!!

I'd disagree with that ... but that's all been done before ... :D

What you said about making TC work is bang on though ... when it starts to slip, go against natural instincts and press the throttle a bit more .. get revs up and let the wheels try to spin, TC sorts it out and 'just works'. :cool:

With difflocks you can get the same effect (takes practice) by left foot cadence braking if two wheels are spinning. :)
 
but the difflock can be used before you start to loose grip and combined with the tc it works very well i fitted difflock to my td5 at the weekend i used all the bits off a a 300tdi gear box and transfer box i allready had the main resen was because the kit that ashcrofts do is out of stock
