Ay up,

Apparently my Auto TD5 2003 facelift may not have diff lock despite the sticker on the console saying it has.

I have tried brut force and ignorance forcing it over to the left whilst both moving slowly and stationary and am frightned of breaking the stick - is there any tell tale signs looking from below which will make it obvious if its fitted or not?

I was reading another forum the other day which said that the facelift models had electronic diff lock automatically selected when in low drive. This is the first i've heard of it and suspect it may be bollocks.

Anyway, if the TC is working correctly do us TD5 drivers actally need diff lock?

Automatic Electronic diff lock, you're right, load of bollocks.
TC v Diff Lock. Opening a real can of worms here.
In my opinion, in most circumstances TC will keep you going, with no need to engage it (or disengage it on hard surfaces) but in some extreme circumstances a diff lock will be better.
You do need to know how to use TC though. If the wheels start spinning, do not lift off, give TC a chance to work.
One potential problem with TC is that it is reactive, that is it comes in after the wheels start to spin, that is one reason LR have gone over to electronically controlled limited slip diffs, that start tightening up before the wheels start to spin. This also minimises damage to the environment.

The other snag with TC and no diff-lock is when you break a half shaft Then you have no drive on any wheels, whereas if you do have difflock you can get drive on both wheels at one end, which will get you home.

There is NO reason why not to have TC AND difflock. One day I am going to do that to my TD5.

Nig issue for me and TC would also be ease of maintenance, and we all know how well protected ABS sensors are ...

ive just had the cdl linkage fitted to my d2 with thanks to urban panzer... Best mod i've done. If you have both, you Also dont have the worry and inconvenience of the 3 f'in amigos of coming on just when you dont neeed them.. It.s happened to me!! If you use the disco off road i would reccomend it :) TC and CDL both working together are excellent...

thats the "annoying" part, Land Rover fitted that sticker to the facelift D2's whether they had a CDL or not, so a LOT of owners get confused.

The thing is, you cannot buy that blooming sticker (I've tried as have LOTS of others), Land rover themselves don't even know the part number lol, yet they fitted it willy nilly..........

As a "general" point, the TC is good, but as already stated you have to "loose" traction for it to work, and electronic aids will never replace a "physical lock"
