diff lock stuck

Hi,
I've read a load of the threads on here about dismantling and freeing the diff lock, and so I have decided to have a go at mine.....see picture.

a few numpty questions.

1. is the nut and bolt that I've undone from the link just an ordinary type ? or is it a 'landrover special' ? coz the thread was stripped and took me 1/2 hr to get nut off.
2. with the link removed, and the lever not moving to left would I be right in assuming the problem lies at (this) the lever end?
3.If I undo the four bolts on the top plate, will anything go 'ping' and be lost forever / break.
4. I reserve the right to ask more numpty questions !!!

If it won't move left its clearly an issue so either try soaking it with penetrating oil for a few days to see if it moves or strip it all apart and clesn and oil it. Also use a pair of grips to operate the small lever that sticks out the top of the transfer box to see if it rotates as it can also seize there.

Looks like I removed wrong bolt. still, got a nice shiny new one to put back !!

so, the story so far........Ive removed the bolt from the gearbox and released the bar, and the same with the hi-low link.....
Ive taken the plate off the lever and given everything inside a good soaking with releasing oil.
I guess I'm going to have to remove the unit. so todays numpty question is.......

1. I presume the unit is held on with the 4 bolts shown in picture. If I remove them, will the unit just lift out , or are there surprises that'll go twang when lifted?

no just 4 bolts and the pinch bolt holding hi/lo linkage on just remember how it goes to get it back on right,the shaft usually siezes in housing on lhs of picture
 
Mine was stuck solid, so i removed the whole unit to use a very large hammer on it, which worked a treat after about 5 mins of lot of whacking.

Put back together loaded with grease, and has worked fine ever since - about 3 years ago now.

But i make sure i put it into low and diff lock once a week to make sure it never seizes up again ;)
 
Thanks for your replies. It's going to be the weekend now before I go any further, but I'll keep giving it a good spray every time I go past.!!
 
YAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY :D:D:D

DONE IT !!!!

had to take the unit off an give it a good (almost unbelievable) whacking with the hammer to free it. Gave the ends a clean with emery cloth and used some copper grease to lube it. (Hope copper grease is ok, and wont chemically react with the steel and aluminium to leave a pile of molten blob on the floor by tomorrow ).
anyways, all bolted back together........and everything works......

So I changed the gearbox bias plate while I was down in the vicinity, and can now get 3 & 4th without having to rummage around the box for them.

Bank Holiday result and am well chuffed.

oooooohh errrr :eek::eek:.......... found this plastic bit on the floor under the disco this morning. looks like something could have dropped off while I was undoing the hi-low linkage. Anyone got any ideas?
Is there an exploded diagram available?

any idea of part numbers? what would happen if I didn't fit them?

Haynes is no good.......unless I'm looking in the wrong place.
 
A POX ON IT !!!! :mad::mad:

got new set of plastic bushes and fitted ok.

re assembled centre console, attached brake cable .......... and now the ratchet on the handbrake don't work. keeps jamming off. (button sticking in)

the rod from button to pawl gets slightly bent you can straighten it with a suitable screw driver
 
handbrake lever suitably poked and now works great.
Thanks to everyone for their advice and tips.

............*is now off to break something else*

my lock diff lever moves slightly left and right but the diff dont lock ive climbed up under the box and can see the lever moving all tyhe way to where it goes in to the box itself but it appears to be the lever on the box thats gone on strike and ides of how to get it moving without dropping the box out or taking a blow torch to the floor?
