Hi all,
Just got my 92 defender 200tdi back from the mechanic (family friend so a trustworthy bloke), after a clutch change, and he warned me that the diff light is staying on.

He assures me that the diff lock isn't in, so it's safe to drive as normal but I haven't jacket the axle up and tested it for myself so I'm not entirely sure.

He said the switch is underneath the screw on panel above the trans tunnel, and it's a simple swap. I will whip the panel off shortly, and try to find the switch, and remove it, so I can order a new one and replace it.

My worry is that after the new clutch went in, something got knocked/ broken so that now the difflock is permanently engaged, and I have no way of knowing. I'm worried that changing the switch is just hiding a problem with the diff lock itself and I'm going to quickly trash my transmission in blissfully unaware of being in permanent diff lock.

Locking the diff in high or low feels different to how it did before. There's no positive change, and it doesn't go more than an inch to the left and doesn't appear to want to stay there. It all worked fine before the clutch change.

??

you could jack one front wheel up and see if it spins or locks ,diff lock switch is on the front t/box out put housing ,behind diff lock spigot, its a simple live from dash light earthed through switch ,

Having a bit of a nightmare here cos just took the panel below the centre seat off the defender, and there's a switch for something right underneath. It's a bolt with two short green wires on it, each with male connectors on. I unplugged it and as I did so, one of the wires fell out of the bolt suggesting it's fecked. It has a spring loaded tip on it. Once I had it out, I replaced the wire which fell out, and tested it with a multimeter, and it seems to work?! Put it back in the landy, and the difflock light is still on no matter what.

Please don't tell me it's the reverse light switch or something! lol

(To add insult to injury, I just checked the alt belt as it was slipping, and the alternator front mount has sheared, so now I've got two problems to sort!)

the one directly under the center seat panel is the reverse light switch ,if that switch is wound in to little then no rev lights, if wound in too far it hinders full reverse gear selection
