In my "new" 1984 90 we think the diff knob is twisted round. As was the gear knob... So how does the diff knob go???

looks like

WINDOW
_____¦H Steering wheel
¦ Drivers Seat
DIFF _____¦N
¦
_____¦L

But it doesnt move as it is described. So is supposed to be twisted 90 Degrees right.??

to engage diff lock you push the lever over to the left. so just grab the lever and pull it back towards you and it'll be disengaged Difflock isn't the same as High and low range. click the link it'll open a pdf of the users manual you get when you buy a new defender. It'll explaineverything.

Don't worry, if you go round a sharp bend just slowly you'll feel one of the rear wheels dragging if you have the diff lock engaged, my daft grandpa drove my 90 5 miles to b&Q and back thinking nothing of it only that the "4 wheel drive was engaged" muppet... lol

Aye and you'll wind the transmission up and probably snap an halfshaft or destroy a differential

Its really simple...

The small lever is the DIF control, it should be pulled back towards the rear (to be in High Range) and pulled across towards the driver (to not lock the centre Dif) - Position a

Starting from Position a
  • If you push the lever towards the window 1 click you will be in Neutral (Diff disengaged)
  • Push once more towards the window and you will be in LOW Range.
Starting from position a

  • If you push the lever towards the passenger side you will lock the centre Dif (a yellow light should be seen on the dash looks like =--=)
  • Push this towards the windscreen one click and you will be in Neutral with Diff Locked (not recommended) (the yellow warning light should be there)
  • Push once more towards the window and you will be in LOW Range with Diff locked (Yellow light on)
Now Dif can be engaged by pushing the lever towards the passenger seat from HIGH, NEUTRAL and LOW range.... It can also be Disengeged by pulling lever towards driver seat.

So to answer the question the knob should have L towards the window and H towards the back of vehlicle. The word LOCK should be Passenger side of the vehicle. (for a RHD :D )

As the others have said read the manual - I know its not the usual bloke thing to do but can save lots on repair bills!
