How do you know not? or were there two modifications:) every one knows the late 98 99 p38's were updated no inbetweens I'm afraid .
There have been plenty of instances of odd configurations, the latest being a MY2000 with an early type front height sensor on one side with holes to match in the chassis. Was it crashed or was it original?
Same with the HEVAC changes the changeover date is fuzzy.

I don't why you chaos are so stubborn what the differance between the engine spinning reciving input or the engine running reciving input next time your int the Vicinity of the connection block try it and see :) yes on paper it might say that but actions speak louder than words .

My last-off production line '02 4.6 had a 2 pin rear diff (which of course failed). Probably LR using up excess stock.

Because until the EDC receives confirmed signals from the CPS it doesn't know it's running, that's why it jumps to high revs momentarily when it starts.
You can't argue with the actual wiring, if there is no circuit, the pump will not run, I know that from playing with the 96.

These mods came along with plastic manifold and egr my 98 has neither :)

EGR was introduced for MY 1998. If your first registered 98 car does not have EGR it is a very early registered 98 made to MY 97 specs. And the lift pump will definitely NOT run on cranking.

my 98 has both :D

My car is first registered 1st January 1999. It was made in Late July 1998. It does not have lift pump on cranking. 2.5 Diesel fuse boxes 94 to 98. AMR3376, AMR6406 both superseded by AMR6477. All have two diodes with no connected provision for lift pump on cranking and are interchangable. Fuse box YQE103420 99 to 01 has three diodes and lift pump on cranking circuit, together with subtle circuit changes, as does the later and last version YQE000010. As far as i am aware the two later boxes are NOT interchangeable with each other and certainly not with the earlier units.

The third diode for pump on cranking was added, as I understand it, to try to overcome hot starting problems on some cars.

Fuse box with two diodes AMR6477. VIN number WA376580 to WA410481. Late 97 to late 98. Backwards compatible. Fuse box YQE103420. VIN number XA103482 to YA438097. Late 98 to late 1999. Three diodes and pump on cranking. Plus wiring changes. Not backwards compatible. So unless your VIN number is XA103482 or better there is NO lift pump on cranking. Yes i would also say it was to try and cure hot starting problems.

Maybe for some, my MY2000 doesn't have a hot start problem. I have never really followed it, but maybe all those fitting the hot start mod are pre 99 cars. Or it's as Wammers says and has been proved by re-timing, chain stretch on the older engines.

A friend of mine is a ex BMW service tech, he has told me it was a known issue on timing, but interestingly didn't happen to all m51 engines, he said there was never a pattern. Serviced to the book or not serviced at all, it was very random

Hi guy i wont start a new thead cos dont want to have to explain it all again
Its now having problems starting warm.
When i say problems its not all the time and when it does it, it can take any were between 1second to 5seconds of cranking to start is this the start of pump timing chain strech or im i overlooking somthing?
How bad can it get? Ie is this as bad as it will get or will it oneday Leave me stranded somewere?

As there is no mixture enrichment on a hot/warm start they need to turn a few times to start, just check you have no air in the clear pipe.
If it gets worse you can always fit a "Hot Start fix" (timed version):) It ain't like a petrol, diesels need to turn fast enough to fire.

Theres no air in the pipe and its a big arse battery so it spins fine
Probably just got used to having to crank because of the fuel leak and was expecting it to start on the first click now lol
And thanks for the email :)

Woke up this morning, my dog was dead...................no no wrong song.

Woke up this morning
P38 was dead
Cranked and cranked for ever.
Feel like shooting it in the head.

My woman was cranky
My dog was worse
Fire up my laptop
Try and fix this curse

When along came Wammers
told us where we erred
Went straight out and tried it
smooth six, it was heard

ran the glow plug cycle
For quiet a few times
Started on the button
Can't find a word that rhymes

So I've got an air leak?
Seems the pump is 'right?
should save some money
Might go out tonight.

Thanks Wammers for that very detailed description of why it won't start if you just sit there and crank it.

That was after standing for a week so I'm pretty confident it should start tomorrow.
