hi, I've notice recently that my defender 300tdi seems a bit sluggish on pull off and up hills. some people have suggested putting diesel treatment in the diesel. what I want to know is, is it worth it and which ones are the best.

Try usual diesel things, fuel and air filter, tappets etc. before worrying about fuel additives. How long since you have had injectors serviced?
There are a lot of fuel additives available, some address fuel lubricity, I think the 2 stroke is to do with this. Some are cleaners only, some petrol in the tank is probably as good.

thanks for all the reply's. I serviced it at the beginning of the year, so filters should be ok. I've just brought a large trailer which I've been towing around and it seem to have started since I started towing that. could it be the clutch.

I tried 2 stroke for a while but can't say I noticed any difference. I tried some Millers Eco Max and did notice a difference with that. Millers reckon it takes a couple of hundred miles for it to clean the injectors and notice a difference but I noticed a difference well before that, possibly because it raises the cetane level of the diesel. Since using the Millers, bottom end torque feels better and so does mid range acceleration. Even when there's no Millers added to the tank you can still feel the difference compared to how it was before so I'd say it's cleaned the injectors or something out somewhere. I can't say I've noticed any difference in economy as I don't monitor it and enjoy giving it some beans when I can anyway. A 500ml bottle (£10 to £13, depending where you buy it) is enough to do 500 Lts of diesel so works out pretty cheap.

I run comma mineral two stroke in the disco 3 and the defender, can't really feel much difference in the defender but makes an enormous difference to the discovery... go figure

Change the filter and fill it with Forte Diesel Treatment. Only have half a tank max of derv and run it into the red. Then use Millers every tank after that.

I did the above with my N/A and it worked wonders.

I have also been running Millers for the last 70k in my Merc CDI, cold starts are a lot quieter with it as it the general running of the engine. I certainly know when I haven't put a dose in the tank.

I tried the 2 stroke thing but didn't notice any difference. I don't buy into the lubrication argument either as when I stripped my high pressure injection pump down after 130k miles to replace the seals, there was no wear on it whatsoever.
