The first time it happened I thought I was imagining things...
The vehicle is a Ser 2 & a half swb deisel.

Tickover seems quite normal until I pull on the hand brake, then the revs decrease to rattle and shake speed..... release the hand brake tickover returns to normal.:confused:

Any thoughts on what might cause this odd behaviour?
 
Hi mine does this as well but not all the time !!Also sometimes when first started , if you do find out what causes it would be grateful if you let me know and i will do likewise!
 
I think its wear in the engine and or gearbox mounts, the whole unit moves with the the action of the handbrake mechanism.

I had considered that possibility but reasoned that it would only happen whilst the lever is being pulled, and return to normal tickover once it is fully applied and let go of.....


*EDIT* Actually, I have just pondered over the mechanics of this and as the lever is pivoted on the chassis my argument does not stand... I will put a dial gauge up against the handbrake drum whilst applying the hand brake.

I will report back :)

I will look for movement but this tickover thing has progressed a bit.......

My plan has been the incremental improvements to performance and driveability, when I first got Clyde running he didn't have an air filter, once I had fitted a standard series filter ass'y he started to smoke a bit more than before on start up, clearing as the engine warmed up.

With a filter on I could easily hear a leak where the vacuum butterfly ass'y joins the inlet manifold. A new o-ring and a paper gasket sealed that up.

I took Clyde for a good run around to enjoy the improvements.... brakes are more efficient.... BUT!

Tickover is now a bit fast until the hand brake is applied and I now see much more grey smoke even when the engine is warm, where do I start to solve this new backward step, Injector pump adjustment maybe?:confused:

Mine does the oposite. Tickover is rough (i have it adjusted to tickover as slow as possible) and gets a bit quicker with the handbrake on.

Putting the brake on does change the natural frequency of the engine/chassis unit, so something is probably vibrating less (or more), just as others have implied. When hand brake is on, it applies force to the brake shoes to stop the drum turning, to stop the LR rolling away! That force reacts into the chassis and acts as a link between gearbox and chassis, which will also act as a pined pivot for the engine/gearbox vibrations.

a way to test this is to replace the solid LR components with a cable in a sheath, just a like modern car handbrakes, to isolate the HB lever from the drum.
