I'm out of commission with a bad shoulder so got a friend to change my lift pump and fuel filter on the 2.5n/a Defender

The man said that he bled it all and everything was fine but every now and then the engine will surge from tickover and then drop slowly back. The revs are sometimes slow to drop during gear changes.

Can it be that he didn't bleed it proper, it was ok before:)

Have a look at the cable from the injector pump to the acceperator pedal. had an issue where one end of that got kinked and it then wouldn't drop to tickover properly.

One other though - partially clogged air filter and a filter housing full of oil from blow-off? i know my 2.5 fouls air cleaners in a most shameful fashion. :)

Thanks for that, ...air filter fine with no oil in it, its a decent engine and the inlet stays reasonably clean.

Cable ok, the engine will be ticking over and then suddenly the revs will rise about a thousand rpm for a second or three then drop back to tick over again,:)

Well it sorted itself out today.......lift pump arm snapped off and dropped into sump:eek:
New lift pump an all, my mate Tom fitted a good used one for me and she is now going like a train.
Be able to drive it soon when my shoulder gets better then I can go out on my own:D
