Hello folks!
I'm puzzled...
BMW diesel engine. The fuel leak-off pipes on the injectors are perished and need replacing.
Easy enough when I get my hands on some 3.2mm hose.
The puzzling bit, for me at least, is which way the fuel is supposed to run through these! Logic tells me they run from no.6 forward to no.1, then back to the fuel filter.
However, when the pipe from the fuel filter to no.1 is removed, fuel ****es from the pipe...
This is creating pressure in the leak-off system, resulting in a leak at no.6.
Anyone explain what the story is here?
Thanks,
Iain

There is supposed to be a small amount of flow through the pipes as you said back into the system. Did you remover the pipe with the engine running by any chance?
If not there'll be some fuel in the pipes but not a huge amount?

Hi Mark, I replaced all the glowplugs, I'd had an irritating leak at no.6 so I replaced the pipe at that end with a wee bit hose I had. Unfortunately, I pulled the pipe from no.1 to the filter and it broke! Perished, the lot of them.
Just to check starting, I fired up. Fuel FROM the filter. I know there is a wee bit in the spillover line, but it should be going the other way? I'm getting new hose today, so I'll bang on bits all the way and I assume it'll all be good, just a bit puzzled by the fuel running FROM the filter...

It goes back to the pump top into a tee piece. It flows from number 6 injector forward. Number 6 has two ports one should capped off completely and the port should plumbed into number 5 injector.
As for fuel running from filter, it should go the injection pump. ;)

All is as you say. I did a temporary (2 years...) fix with some screenwash tubing that fitted, saw the wee bubbles and flow, all was as it should be. Must be some small pressure at the filter that spits out fuel if the line is off on no.1. I've got the proper tube, but it's raining...
Cheers for the help and info!
Iain

The pipe from the fuel filter is for the MAP sensor and goes to a nipple on the underside of the inlet manifold.

I know people have difficulty sourcing the Gates hose. Come across at www.carbuilder.com when sourcing DIY braided brake hose for my Honda. Might be worth checking/ bookmarking? 3.2mm Gates hose there is about £5 a metre.

I think that's where I got my last lot from. Really quick and efficient service. Seems decent stuff so far. It is the reinforced stuff you want.
