Does anyone know why diesels smoke so much when cold, or not under any load? i have done the injection timing on mine, have lots of power and when under load only smokes a little black (what oil is getting in past the rings) when is driving at normal speeds. But with engine under no-load or when cold, blows clouds of grey smoke. Also i have put in one of those mixes from the motor factors which is meant to clean the injectors but to no improvement. if anyone has any knowledge about this i would be very grateful - thanks

when cold is roughly normal if the engine has done alot of miles as it is probly quite worn as long as it greyish not black then sum might just be condensation and then that would answer why it dissapears wen it gets warm

Well i've mixed in some of those injector cleaners you put in with diesel, but i read here once you can do the same thing with petrol. Would'nt faulty injectors over-fuel when under load as well though? I was reading on a other forum that worn valve guides can cause smoke at low revs if anyone has any info on that?

How did you adjust the timing - I've been advised by an expert that setting up the timing on these engines by the book is a waste of time. When they are a bit worn it's better to just adjust them by hand. Have a look at some older threads, if you haven't allready, smoking 2 1/4 diesels have been discussed quite a bit over the past few weeks. Lift out the dipstick when the engine is running, if smoke comes out of the hole then the rings and bores are worn, which could be causing the smoking. You'll need to take the head off to change the valve stem seals. If it's bores or valve stem seals causing the smoke then I would expect the smoke to be blue.
