P38A Diesel smoke and knocking from top end..

Just finished 309 mile run and have acquired loud knocking from rear top end of engine and grey, not black, smoke when accelerating. No overheating or oil leaks but low on power. Next call is to the AA to get me home before I cause any further damage...
Suggestions or help if there is something I can do..?

I'd try an ignition reset.

At the moment I'll try anything, is this a test book/ nanocom item..? Or something that can be done from the ground.. ?

It's turning the engine off, wait a minute and restart.

It was parked for a short while and restarted but still the knocking and smoking was there earlier. Thanks

Well knocking ain't good.
I'd suspect an injector.
