Diesel P38 - Which Chip to go for?

Why when people replace engines don't they favour the common rail then? Or is it not that simple to cross them between cars?

Because they are totally different systems and much too much alteration would be needed. Think i am correct in saying someone does a TD6 convertion for the P38 at a cost of around seven grand.

I assume that includes the engine? Shame cars aren't like boats and outboards - would be so much simpler.

Yeah engine included, but why would you spend that much on a car worth half of that price. Which will still be worth the same when it's done. Bit silly really. Standard for the M51 fitted in the P38 is about 136 BHP you can get around 165 BHP with a chip. If you drive it like a nun and do longish trips you may get a slight MPG increase. If you use the power around town it will drink fuel, mine does, and it is chipped. You don't get owt for nowt unfortunatly.

To be honest, the gearbox horror stories are better at reigning in the power than the trip computer readout. And yeah, wait a couple more years and you'll probably be able to pick up an L322 for just a bit over that price.

If the gearbox is sound to start with i personally don't think a chip will cause it much trouble. A lot of the torque at lower speeds is absorbed by the slip in the torque convertor and converted to heat so you need a good cooler circuit. However if you do a lot of towing with the extra power that could be a problem. Main issue is the one way clutches turning inside out.

I defanatly agree the psi box i fitted was well worth the money but then my box did the same, spragg clutch gone, it did fix its self the other day but after a thousand miles it frigged out again, sayin that though my gearbox has done 158,000 miles and people service the engine and look after them well but nearly every1 forgets to service the gearbox and look after it with oil changes and filters... so its gona die at some point...

Surely it should be checked during a Land Rover service?

lots of things should be checked on a service but a lot of things dont in dealers as the technicians are normally on a bonus scheme for hours sold, so the more hours they sell the more they get paid hence corners cut and things not done!
and to add to the chipped part recently soldered in a new chip from a company in scotland called ves sport into my dse very pleased so much more responsive and the power increase has made the driveability so much better that the £120 i paid for the new chip was worth every penny.
if it chews the gearbox up then i will put the money saved from buying a plug in tuning box towards a new gearbox!

Hi guys and gals just bought a 98- P38 4.0 V8se, well happy so far, even with the petrol bowser I tow behind it........................ I'm sure I will have loads of questions over the next few weeks but here are 2 to get the ball rolling with you experts.
1. Heated seats - do they only heat on the seat part (Not the back part)
2. Front light wipers - Is there a separate switch for these to operate?
Looking forward to your comments.

This is an old thread you are better starting a new one on your particular problems. Both parts of seat should get warm and headlamp wipers operate every second operation of screen washers if headlamps are turned on.
