i currently have a 2.5 dse Auto p38 and iam thinking of selling it and buying another but iam in two minds wether to get another auto or go for a manuali know that the manuals do whine a little and the autos are smoother than the manuals please can anyone tell me of troubles that the manuals suffer from and what to look for when buying a manual p38? thanks

Hi mine is a manual, and I can relate to what others are saying about having to slip the clutch - but this is only really a problem with a heavy trailer or when doing a hill start, when the engine will bog down if you don't keep it up at 2K rpm and slip the clutch a bit. In normal driving it is fine once you are used to it.

The BMW straight six engine is very refined and smooth, so having to give it some extra revs on take off isn't a huge issue once you get used to it. It's quite petrol-like in this respect.

According to the service history, my car had a new clutch at 130K km, so about 80K miles, so they obviously can wear out relatively quickly.

I think the auto probably suits the engine and car better, but don't dismiss the manual - I prefer driving manual cars anyway especially in hilly areas with lots of bendy roads, when auto boxes often struggle to choose the correct gear. The manual gearbox is very pleasant to use as well and the clutch is nicely weighted.

On the subject of fuel consumption, I don't think mine is much better than people with auto boxes get, so I'm not sure choosing the manual gearbox just to get better economy is worthwhile.

Hope this helps....

Cheers

In one DMF.

Mines a manual and the Dual Mass Flywheel Causes a rough idle, wrongly misdiagnosed as the Fuel Injection Pump, but equally as expensive to fix!

Happens when warm and blips on the throttle will eliminate the roughness but do listen out when off the throttle coming to a stop to check when it is roughing.

well thankyou all you have helped me made my mind up i will stick with the auto as mine has not caused me any problems in the year i have had it
