Hi. Having renewed the oil seal (it was missing) on the dip stick tube to cure  an oil leak from here I noticed that the dip stick does not protrude into the sump. It actually stops short about 2 inches before the bottom of the dipstick tube. Therefore the oil level goes above the seal line and up into the dipstick tube to get to the right oil level. Is this normal or have I got the wrong dipstick?
I spoke to both Land Rover and BMW and both just scratched their heads and suggested either to buy one so I know I have the right one or nab someone who has the same engine and compare dipstick lengths!!
I think it is the right one as it fits in ok but obviously someone has been buggering around with it in the first place to leave out the oil seal.
Just a thought.

Oh sorry. Yes. It is a BMW 2.5 doosel and that is a very good idea. I'll measure it later and post it. Can't just yet as it's round the corner having a steam clean. (I also had a leak round the rocker cover gasket and that was an oily mess too.)
Cheers!

You might have the correct dip stick, but the wrong tube that it sits in - I've seen that before.
Best measure dip stick and tube.
