Diesel leaking oil from dipstick

I know this is an old thread but no point making a new one, I resolved this issue back in January but I still get oil stains coming from the filler cap and also oil weaping from the head gasket area at the right side of the head at the front, above the timing chain, could the gauze have blocked again so quickly or has my pcv had it? I have done a compression test this year and it was all ok, many thanks.

Not leak off pipes by any chance?
There should be no excess pressure in the sump/rocker cover so worth checking the PCV is not knackered.
 
It seems to be coming from the head gasket but that was replaced this year, i tried to enquire about a pcv from land rover but apparently it doesnt show up on the parts diagram, cheers.
 
Ok so bmw dont list it either so i guess i will have to have a look at it, from memory it seemed ok but like you say may just need cleaning again. I think the oil leak i mentioned is from the front cover gasket so im not too worried about that, but i am still getting oil from the filler cap.

Just out of interest, the egr valve was removed from the car, does this mean the intake air temperature sensor should be not plugged in to anything? Cheers.

If it is an EGR engine there is no inlet air temp sensor on the manifold. Change the seal on the filler cap they harden with age and leak.
 
It had a new engine but all the ancillaries came from the original engine, it is alloy yes.

EGR engines have plastic manifolds and no IAT sensor. You have to change the manifold studs to fit the plastic version. Maybe third engine and someone could not be arsed at some stage. So the answer is no it does not need connecting. There should be nothing in your EGR loom to plug into it.

I stripped the cam cover down and it was all nice and clean, the pcv seemed ok but then I wouldn't be able to tell if it wasn't. Would putting the old style breather that goes on the outside make any difference?

With regards to the filler cap, i have got the original old one or a britpart replacement that is about 18 months old. I am struggling to remember if this leak stopped after I cleaned out the cam cover earlier this year, I recently fixed the breather hose that goes into the inet so that it seals better, could that cause it to leak somehow? cheers.

Crankcase pressure should be sucked out by the turbo via the vent valve. Maintaining a partial vacuum in the crankcase. It is basically a pressure controlled variable NRV. Either it is not working or you have a serious blow by. Do you get smoke out of the oil filler with the cap removed or just pulsed pressure?

No smoke just a bit of oil with the cap lifted a bit, i did a compresion test recently and that was ok, there is oil around the joint to the inlet so i am assuming something is coming through there, maybe the pcv is not opening enough, I obtained a part number so maybe I might be able to find a replacement, cheers.

The valve is normally open allowing the turbo to suck air from the crank case. When depression in the inlet caused by suction from the turbo is less than the pressure in the crank case air is sucked out of the crankcase via the valve into the inlet tract. When pressure in the crank case is lower than the depression in the inlet tract the valve diaphragm is sucked down closing a port which stops further air from being evacuated from the crank case. Maintaining a constant partial vacuum in the crank case as long as the engine is running. Oil inside the turbo pipes is normal but should not be excessive, leakage from joints just means they need stripping cleaning and sealing. A little Hylomar smeared around inside of the cleaned rubber pipes and re-fitting usually cures that. Have you cleaned out the intercooler lately.

Yes I cleaned out the intercooler just the other day. Incidentally the hose that connects to the intercooler from the turbo keeps sliding along the intercooler duct even though it has a new jubille clip, almost like the intercooler is blocked hence why i cleaned it, that and poor power recently.

Have you checked all the hoses for internal delamination?

As far as I could see there wasn't any, the boost hose hasn't moved as much since cleaning out the intercooler and to begin with there wasn't much oil coming out of the filler cap however after a few days there has been a load leak out. There is definately something wrong, I have to press really hard on the pedal now when drving when I didn't have to as much before, cheers.

Think it's time to remove all the hoses and check them and that the turbo is actually doing something. If it's not sucking it sure ain't blowing. It should spin freely with no lateral or axle movement.
