Hello All!
As you can read in my other post today, I suffered a similar and frightening experience as my 2003 Discovery TD5, it took off down the road at speed as I swerved, braked and fortunately didn't kill anyone. This was due to the oil level (augmented with diesel) being right up the dip stick and forced through the breather & turbo. I'm left with trying to determine, for certain, the cause, can you help. I would prefer to avoid spending much more money on investigation because , if the head is cracked the car will have to be scrapped.
I have had the injector O rings and copper seals replaced and to be certain this has been done twice by a good garage, they actually built a special tool to LR specifications to locate the O rings correctly onto the injectors.
They looked for a crack in the head but could not detect one by eye.
The oil level is now going up again, about half an inch after driving 200 miles.
I can see from past blogs that the TD5 motors are known for cracking or being porous and this issue is well known. If the head is faulty I would have to scrap the car so I feel reluctant to spend much more on investigation, your opinions would be welcomed.
Also, does anyone know if LR are informed or concerned that there are people in danger out there due to a known failure of TD5's.
Many thanks ! Hopeddd

Why would a 'Good' garage check for a cracked cylinder head by eye?

Does the fuel pump stop running after about 3 mins with ignition in pos 2 without starting the engine? If not then it is leaking past the injector seals I would say. If not then probably a cracked head

If mine 'ran away' I would just put it into neutral and let the engine self destruct if I could not shut it off

No point driving unless you know what to do if there is a problem IMO

Hello Hedgehog,

So, travelling at speed, in the middle lane and surrounded by traffic , you would put your car into neutral and let it self destruct, billowing out smoke, causing a smoke screen blackout and almost certain collisions probably killing those who ran into you as well as the occupants of you vehicle....yep! you know best!

I would do the same as hedgyhog70 as at least you are controling the vehicle rather than fighting it and trying to avoid other motorists. The other cars will soon move when they see whats happening.

Until it happens you dont know what you'll do. Only sure thing is that you're likely to ****e yourself whatever happens. Having watched a few runaway vids and seen one genny set runaway up close I dont think I'd sit behind the wheel with my foot on the clutch waiting for the engine to go bang two feet from my nads.

Have had 2 vans and a class two scania do it so far. Dipped clutch, got to side of road or layby and got the hell out. Dont want to be too close if it goes pop.
